Watch your feet

When the white light clears away this time, the abductees find themselves standing in an environment that is, if possible, even blander than the soul-destroying corporate cube farm. The horizon and sky--or is it a ceiling?--overhead are smooth and white, though with a slight curve to it suggesting that they are looking up at the inside of an ( Read more... )

As they begin to move about, and not just in the direction of the cookies, the oval tiles begin to move, too ... vertically. Instead of a smooth floor, the abductees now find themselves standing on (or trying to stand on) an uneven forest of oval pillars. Some pillars stretch for what seems like miles overhead, while others are only a few inches lower than their feet. Still others are so far down that the gap might as well be bottomless.

Good thing he's got an excellent natural sense of balance. He peers down from his sudden lofty perch. What the hell? He looks at the cookie in his hand still, shrugs, and then stuffs it in his mouth. In for a penny, at this point.

Huh. It's not that bad, either.

"Whoa. Hey, this is kind of like that scene in The Golden Child."

"As long as it's not that stone hopscotch scene in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade..."

Flash's balance is pretty solid, too. Being quick helps that. Even if he's still trying to shake off the imagery he was just subjected to.

With a rise in that humming sound, the pillars shift again, each of them moving to different heights.

The Question takes a seat on one of the pillars, crossing his legs and staring out at the shifting floor, looking for the pattern.

"Mimicking the amplitude of a sound wave, perhaps."

Fire turns into her flaming alter-self, and flies up to check out some of the taller towers.

Dick moves into a flawless one-handed handstand on his precarious perch, and looks around him at what he can see.

"Or some weird kind of graph. But since this thing's got a mad-on for sound..."

As Fire flies around the higher pillars, some of them slide downwards while others rise higher. Oddly enough, no matter how high she flies, she doesn't seem to be able to reach the "ceiling."

Teetering on one foot for a moment, Jesse regains her footing and crouches.

"Someone with a better voice want to try singing again? See if that does anything?"

The Question seems to approve of that idea.

"Oh, Danny Boy.. the pipes, the pipes are calling.."

Under her hood, Raven is rolling her eyes as she maintains her balance on a pillar.

"Well, let's see.. isn't it G above high C that destroys glass?"

"As long as these pillars aren't made out of glass," he cautions. "I don't know about you, but it looks like a hell of a long way down from here."

At the sound of the traditional Irish tune, the pillars pause in their motion for a few bars, then resume their movements, though at a slower rate than before.

"Fair enough," she says, landing on one of the taller pillars. "On the other hand, I'm sick of playing guessing games with a child-minded being who thinks we're 'playing.'"

"I'm kinda glad I'm not prone to getting seasick... Can someone try the singing thing again, please?" There's a frustrated edge to her voice.
