'Tis the Season

Dec 26, 2008 02:41

This holiday season, there is no phony distress call, no false alarm of an impending alien invasion. In fact, the invitations had been sent out weeks ago to as many individuals as the Watchtower's party planning committee could think of - with some help from the Justice League's computerized roster, of course. Small cards requesting RSVPs had been ( Read more... )

Raven stood off in a corner by herself, sipping an eggnog and eating a chocolate chip cookie.

It wasn't that she wasn't feeling festive. She was...well feeling festive for Raven. It was just that she had no desire to dampen the spirits of everyone else by getting to close to the crowd.

He strides like an ancient juggernaut, rippling through the crowd as though it were the sea and he the bow of a sailing ship. The Man of Steel's subtly alien features are more prominant in the light of the Watchtower; his chin just a little too rounded, his eyes a tiny bit too far apart, his face horribly cold when Superman doesn't remember to throw on his famous smile. In a certain light, it can almost be...understood, why certain people on Earth are so obsessed with the idea that the Man of Tomorrow is not here to help, but to conquer: he certainly can look the part. And he's coming closer...

...and, Superman proceeds to totally ruin it by rubbing the back of his head, grinning sheepishly and saying, "Shucks, Miss Raven, I'm sorry if those cookies stink. I've been trying to learn my mom's secret recipe, but I'm afraid I'm just not very good yet. Only reason I baked a few was because the pretzels went bad..."

Raven perked her head up at Superman's entrance and managed to give him a small half-smile.

"The cookies are wonderful, Superman," Raven said, "It is not because of the cookies that I am standing over here by myself, I assure you."

"Oh?" Superman asks, perhaps a little clueless. Does he know about Raven's occasional very real need for 'me time', or is he just playing dumb to put the woman at ease?

Honestly, it's probably a little of both, but Clark just leaves the question open, silently taking a cookie for himself and leaning against the table. It is a little awkward, because he does not want to spill the punch bowl...again...but for whatever reason, Superman has not taken Raven's hint.

Raven found herself a little confused. She'd thought that most of the Justice League knew of her...backstory.

"It is just that everyone is so festive," she said, "I have no desire to destroy the mood of those around me."

"Oh." Superman says sagely, "Just not feeling very social, then?"
