It's a date.

Dec 20, 2008 02:49

It wasn't the next day like they'd originally planned. Trying to catch up on the lives they lost led them in different directions, and of course they found issues that needed their immediate attention. Diana had a lead on some Amazonians, while John had to get up to speed on his own architectural firm's current projects, lest they fall apart. ( Read more... )

He'd been kind enough to leave the apartment so that she could get ready for their date, and Diana hopes that she will not disappoint. She'd found the dress at the back of the closet, still wrapped in the plastic store bag on its hanger. The sheath dress with contrasting bands of light and dark blue hugs her curves, with the ever-present silver bracers completing the look. Her hair is pulled back and loosely gathered at the nape of her neck, strands curling around her face.

Coming up behind John, she takes a moment to appreciate just how good he looks in that suit, and then clears her throat.

"Hello, John."

John turns around, and anything he was about to say vanishes from his throat at the sight of her. She's wearing more clothing than she usually does, but somehow it's even sexier.

Because she looks fantastic... and she's dressed up for a night with him.

This is still unreal.

"Hello. You look incredible," he finally manages to say.

"Thank you -- you are looking quite dashing yourself." She leans in to give him a quick kiss on the cheek. Adjusting her stole, Diana looks around. Dinner out would be a nice distraction from searching for her fellow Amazons.

Not to mention the opportunity to get to know John better, and to find out what might have attracted her in the first place to him.

Other than the kissing, that is.

"Is our table ready?"

"It is indeed," says the maitre'd. Apparently John didn't quite look good enough on his own to get a table right away, but Diana wows the staff enough to get things done.

John offers his arm and tries to kill the butterflies swirling in his stomach as they walk to the table.

What if you screw this thing up now? When you KNOW it worked before? Would you ever be able to get over that?

Steady, man.

Taking the offered arm, Diana stays quiet until they get to their table, set back in a quiet nook away from the other diners. A single candle burns in a stubby glass bowl and casts a pleasant golden light across the linens.

She smiles at the maitre'd, who almost trips over his own feet in response as he pulls out a chair for Diana.

Once seated, she looks across at John. He looks nervous. Oh Hera, what if he is doing this out of pity? Diana shifts in her chair -- they hadn't had much time together these past few days, what with Diana's search and John getting his business in order.

And he kept insisting on taking on the couch, rather than taking the bed and letting her sleep out in the living room.

"So," he decides to start, without a clear direction in his head as he slides into his seat. "Better late than never, huh?"

"Yes, yes. Neither of us have been at the apartment much these past few days."

A tentative smile, as she plays with the edge of the menu laid out in front of her.

"This is a chance for both of us to take a breath and relax, I think. We've been so busy."

He nods to that.

"What have you been up to? Have you picked up anything new about... the missing time?"

A shake of her head.

"Nothing yet, though I honestly have not had much time. I had a visit from a goddess."

She says this the same way that one might speak of a visit from a friend.

"She gave me a quest of sorts... to find the Bana-Mighdall."

An eyebrow lifts.

"I feel as though I should know what that is."

"I would not expect most to know of the Bana. They were once part of the Amazon tribe, a few thousand years ago... there was a split, between the two Amazon queens."

She notices the waiter hovering nearby and waves him over, ordering a bottle of wine for the two of them. As he leaves, Diana takes a sip from her water glass and continues.

"Queen Hippolyta went one way, Queen Antiope went the other, eventually settling in Eqypt and following the Eqyptian pantheon. That was who I received the visit from -- Bast. They wish to have their followers back." A smile as she traces the rim of her glass with a finger.

"That is of course an abridged version. Greatly abridged. I do have books of our history at home, if you ever wish to learn more."

"You don't have to abridge it for me, you know. I'm interested."

Wine. He can't imagine Diana drunk. At all.

"Any luck in finding them?"

A shake of her head.

"I know the details of what happened when the Amazons disappeared, or at least what the Watchtower computer can tell me."

There's a moment where she looks down, seemingly distracted, but then focuses her attention back to John. She can't allow herself to think on that for too long, not tonight.

"Some of them are there, on Themyscira. The others are presumeably... elsewhere."

"I suppose it'd be too obvious to start looking around in Egypt, huh?"

He wants to be able to offer some comfort about Themyscira, but he's not sure what he can, beyond pleasant distraction.

"Cassandra asked exactly the same question, actually. I have the suspicion that if it had been that easy, I would not have received a visit from an impatient goddess. But enough about myself. How have you been?"
