Manhunter crosses her arms, putting on an act of being totally hard and not-scared.

"Oh, scary. Like I haven't seen that in a horror flick before."

Yeah, but if you look at her eyes?

There's a bit of fear there.

Kate Spencer has not been doing this long. Or too well.

She circles the creature, holding on tightly to her staff, before lashing out towards its right side.

This is just as much for Todd's benefit as hers. Help him develop more finesse in his constructs, and more control over their actions.

His hands still have to move with the creature to keep it flowing, after all. Something Dad seldom has to do, if ever.

A claw lashes down to parry the blow, and pushes back in an attempt to throw off her step.

"Look, we can't all have it as easy as pointing a laser-stick in someone's face. What, they were all out of lightsabers that day?"

Kate glared at Todd. "Don't be cute," she said. "Save that for your boyfriend." That said, she moved towards the left this time, went down and came back up to sucker punch the shadow-thing. You know, as long as her hand didn't go through it or anything.

"Ooh, I'll have to tell him. See if he's the jealous type."

He manages to pull the construct back some, but the second blow connects and hits solid. The shadow gets lifted up, force and momentum sending it back several feet.

And then it's arm extends, a clawed hand aiming directly for Manhunter's face.

"What the %^(#?!" Kate steps back but gets scratched anyway. Angry, she lashes out with her leg in an attempt to kick the hand.

It's a stupid, stupid move.

It pays off, though. The rest of the creature is too far back to really counter, so the kick sends its arm wide.

It pulls itself back together, letting the vigilante come to it this time.

"Sorry! Went farther than I wanted it to!"

"Oh please. You just wanna see how far I'll go without trying to go all kill-happy on you." She rushed the creature, went down, and twirled, lashing out with her leg to trip it.

"That is the point, no? And you're doing way better than last time."

The creature goes down hard, and the psychic feedback from its own 'injuries' hit Todd pretty hard. Hard enough to knock out his concentration, at least, and the shadow-construct melts away.

Kate dusts the bottom of her uniform off and she picks up her staff, twirling it around. "Thanks," she said, "but if you still think that...you know what? No. I'm leaving it at thanks."

"You promised to try it. Or do you want to take Damon down with you when you get exposed, and one of the best prosecuting attorneys at one of the best law firms in the country goes on trial for murder?"

It's a low-blow, but Todd's never not had a firm stand on her doing this. He can't in good conscience let her kill whoever she thinks deserves it. And he still thinks he can reach her, whatever it takes.

Let her hate him, sure, but he's not going away unless she fires her co-counsel.

"That would require getting caught, wouldn't it?" she snapped. "I'm a prosecuter. You know this. I know cases and I know the law and if I need to, I can hide behind it. But here's the thing. I don't kill innocents or good guys. I kill the ones that deserve it." She crosses her arms. "I'm not a member of the Justice anything. I don't need to follow your rules. But I'm agreeing to try. That doesn't mean I won't go fatal if the situation or culprit truly demands it."

"Our rules? What about the rules you stand for--the very reason you have a job? You put on spandex, and suddenly they don't matter?"

Another shadow-being forms out of the blackness, this one shaped differently. It might resemble a minotaur if anything, but it's vague. Mostly just big, with horns on its head.

He really does need to work on the precise.

Kate snarled. "I stole this costume because my day job was doing jack-all to actually put the killers behind bars. Kate Spencer is not Manhunter. Manhunter is not Kate Spencer. We are two different entities with two different jobs to do." She leapt at the Minotaur-thing, bringing her staff down towards it's head, between it's horns.

"Yeah? I tried to destroy the whole damned world a couple of times, but you don't see me telling you that was someone else. You can't honestly say that you're that distanced from your actions."

The monsters arms raise up, and the staff is easily deflected. Todd's pouring more strength into this one, testing her against a foe much stronger than she is.

A leg raises, and kicks Manhunter hard in the stomach.

Manhunter stumbles back, falling down. She turns, swiping first with her staff and then with her leg. It's a move that'll be all too familiar to Todd by now. "In as far as the rest of the world knows? We're two completely different women. That's all that matters. If I get caught? Oh look, I plead insanity. Split personality, maybe? It works well enough for Rose & Thorn."

A move his constructs would normally have dodged easy, but this one's big and bulky, and Todd isn't used to it yet. It connects, and this one dissipates as well.

"So you get locked up in an asylum instead of a jail. You're still locked up, your legal career is ruined, and now every case you ever worked on gets to be re-examined because you've been deemed 'insane.' You get sent to an institution, which could then just MAKE you crazy. Then what?"

He doesn't touch the Rose & Thorn issue, but she probably sees him tense up as tendrils of shadow reach towards her. There's clearly a personal issue locked deep in there.
