More than twenty Naval bases fell victim to the Base Realignment and Closure process of 1995. The Naval station and shipyards at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania were among them. Downsizing of national forces and the decommissioning of older class ships made the closure almost anti-climactic. By the time the decision came, the base was already devoid of surface vessels and lean on personnel. Philadelphia made no official comment when the Department of Defense pulled the plug. Miscellaneous buildings, supply warehouses, deep-draft drydocks, and a hanger remained.
A decade later, the base rests unoccupied and dilapidated. A small portion of the southern expanse has been demolished and converted into a business park. The rest is a collection of cracked asphalt and abandoned facilities. Some predate World War II and show every day of their age. Some were renovated in the 1970s and look no better.
Despite the state of the base, there are some aspects untouched by disuse and time. The underground tunnels connecting the various complexes are in tact. Above is four miles of property on the banks of the Schuykill River. Interstates 95 and 76 are within a stone's throw. To the north is the Walt Whitman Bridge. By land, air, and river, the rest of the East Coast is a short distance away.
Titans East needs a new home. Will this forgotten piece of real estate fit the bill? They're here in mass to evaluate that very question.
