Dearest Internet,
I listened to a radio article today about people "compacting" the lifestyles by not buying things. Sort of a 2007 resolution. Some are calling it smug hipocracy - fine fine. Apparently others have the audacity to call it unamerican - has to do with economy and pulling your dollars out of it. I can see that point and I do honestly think it has some basis. But I also think it is short-sighted.
Here's the thing: the economy responds to market pressures - that's one of the beauties of the whole thing. As more people begin to take part in "compacting" their goods the markets will respond. How will they respond? Well, it may be that the big retailers will be the only ones to survive because they'll be able to afford to pump up their advertising. On the other hand the move towards "compacting" may have a drag effect. In one direction that move will be slowed by resistance to change and in the other direction the move will slowly pull more and more people over. As people edge in that direction they will slowly change the makeup of their purchases. This can already be seen in "buying green" or buying only shade-grown coffee, etc. The difference is that the compactors may be at the head of this slow-moving wave so they are hitting the brunt of the criticism. I would say that really, we've already seen the markets adjust to these changes and the best is yet to come.
So, yeah, I'm probably already hipocritical enough on the topic but I really wanted to get that out.
