DRM-free music from SonyBMG?

Sony announced to sell uncrippled, digital-rights-management (copy protection)-free MP3 music. Online. But... let me get this straight. Music fans will be able to get at the DRM-free tracks by buying gift cards for Sony's Platinum MusicPass service.

Sony BMG said the DRM-free MP3s would go on sale in the US from 15 January.

Those buying the gift cards will be able to download albums from the MusicPass.com website. At launch 37 albums from artists such as Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne and Bruce Springsteen will be available.

Customers will be able to get access to the downloadable tracks by typing in an identifying number on the back of the gift card. Cards are expected to cost $12.99 (£6.58) and will be available from stores such as Best Buy and Target.

So this is how Internet works?! You go to a store, buy some plastic card to enter it's code on an internet platform which then lets you wait for some download?

I'm not sure how you people do it, but for me it's something like this: I either go to a store, buy a nice CD which serves better quality than any MP3 download and when I'm back home I take 10 minutes to rip it onto my computer, OR I stay at home, browse some online music catalogue and buy a few tracks I like. Usually, though, whenever I decide to buy an entire album, I order the CD online, so two days later I have the CD and still didn't leave the house for it.

So what exactly is SonyBMG's plan with this? Are they planning to sell music? Are they trying to convince people to rather download illegally, than legally through their "online"-shop? But hey: Sony's Platinum MusicPass service. - doesn't that sound like some really great thing, I mean.. Platinum and all. ;-)

This is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a long time. I bet their CDs are still DRM-crippled and you can't easily rip them to get the music on the computer.... oh, I'm beginning to understand. :) They want their customers to buy both: The CD AND the Platinum MusicPasses, so they will now be able get their music onto the computer legally, as ripping is not allowed. Well thanks for that offer.
