The fun thing (or "fun" thing) about Fantasy Theater is that I never really know what an issue is going to turn out like until the last minute. The original plan was to have Layla's Capella story along with the Phantos story I've shown bits of previously. Well, Phantos is still not quite done. :-/ But I had the Glorianna piece that I drew as a giveaway for last year's Wizard Chicago show. And Rene's Starhoppers piece appeared out of nowhere, like Athena springing from the head of Zeus (I had no idea he was even working on it, the sly dog). So there's your issue, and I'm very pleased with it.

No color cover this time out. I like doing them, and the response has been good, but it's hard to justify the extra expense on a book that doesn't make money in the first place. I still plan on doing them, just not necessarily every issue. #20 will almost certainly have one, since that's going to be my self-indulgent, "OMG, lookit me I've published 20 whole issues" memorial special. So if anyone wants to send along pin-ups or essays or what have you for that one, it would certainly be appreciated.

Speaking of the cover, while I was working on it, Marvel announced their new "Marvel Divas" book, which was met with bemusement and snark from various quarters. I decided I'd make a special effort to do an illo that was striking and attractive, without being quite to so super-duper-cheesecakey. Two out of three of them are wearing sensible clothing, even. ;-) The other challenge was matching Rene's version of Desdemona (he traded in her oh-so-'80s cornrows for a short, Halle Berry-inspired 'do), while keeping her distinct from that other shaggy-haired brunette, Capella. Note how I positioned Des' gun between them, to further separate the two. Oh, and this cover is the official debut of the new Fantasy Theater logo, which I'll be using from here on out (until I change my mind).

Anyway, there it is. If you're at SPACE this weekend, you can get one in person. Otherwise, if you're on the comp list, look for it in your mailbox sometime after.
