Heirs to the Lost World RPG

With the new year, 2013 to be specific, approaching fast, I've been thinking of something.

One of my other interests besides dinosaurs is cultures, specifically those of the Aztecs and the Mayans. I've been fascinated by these two cultures since my childhood, and have read quite a few books on them over the years, mostly borrowed from the library and other book sources. One of the things I've never done is had a roleplaying game that involved the Aztecs and the Mayans. Oh sure, I've had players create a few characters of each type over the years for various roleplaying games, but it's not the same as actually playing an rpg that's focused on them, although there have been a few game supplements covering them for various rpgs out there.

Until recently I discovered a new game that's been around since 2010 (I think).

Heirs to the Lost World (HttLW for short) is a tabletop roleplaying game in the Mythic New World during the Age of Exploration. This is an alternate world where the Aztecs have been successfully fighting off the Spanish for 150 years, and seems to have all the right stuff that I'm looking for in a game set in the right time period (even if it is alternate history). The one thing that I've seen about the game that I don't like is the computer generated artwork, though from what I can tell, the game maps are done in a more traditional manner. The artwork is just at odds with the mindset for such a game, given the historical nature and aspects of the game world itself.

I've been looking for something different in terms of a roleplaying game to add to my stable of games that I run, and this one looks like it may be it. I plan to run Heirs to the Lost World in 2013, some time after I receive my copies of the game (yes, I ordered two!), and am even considering running the game at CanGames, 2013 this coming May.

Between Primeval RPG, Parsec, Shadows of Esteren, and Heirs to the Lost World, 2013 promises to be a good year of gaming.
