For those who are fans of the
Doctor Who tv series, and those who were fans of the actor...
Jon Pertwee, the third actor to play the Doctor in the Doctor Who series, was born on this day in 1919. He would have been 105 years old today.
Born into a theatrical family, Jon Pertwee became nationally known as a comedy actor, playing Chief Petty Officer Pertwee (and three other roles) in the BBC Radio sitcom The Navy Lark (1959-1977) and appearing in four films in the Carry On series. On television, Pertwee starred as the third incarnation of the Doctor in the long-running British science fiction series Doctor Who (1970-1974), hosted the game show Whodunnit? (1974-1978) and played the title character in Worzel Gummidge (1979-1981 and 1987-1989).
While William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton are my favourite Doctors, I quite liked Pertwee in the role as well, as he gave the series a more active lead, one who could fight hand-to-hand or with swords and the like when he had to, but who was also very much the intellectual, know-it-all that his predecessors (and those that came after him) brought to the role. Pertwee's Doctor was suave, stylish and scientifically minded - a true Doctor and a gentleman! And his flamboyant wardrobe could not be beat in the role.
Jon Pertwee was a superb actor, and he will never be forgotten by folks who loved and admired his acting abilities, and who came to know him as the Third Doctor on the tv series that we have all come to know and love.
