Kathy's Friday Evening Atlantis: The Second Age RPG, Session 1

Jul 23, 2022 19:02

Last night, the Friday night gaming group met up for its weekly session.

This was a good night for me, as I got to play once more. As mentioned in this post two weeks ago, Kathy is running the Atlantis: The Second Age sword & sorcery RPG. As noted in the previous post, I'm playing Ormarr the Short, aka The Red Fox, a thief who dabbles in magic.

After the players arrived around 7:00 pm or so, we spent about 10 minutes catching up on the week, and discussing the state of the COVID-19 shot situation currently in Ontario. (I've had my four doses so far, but the last one was some months ago.) Once we'd socialised a bit, Kathy said it was time to get down to gaming. She went over the basic mechanics of the game once more, and told us where in the antediluvian world we'd all be starting, and then got down to play.

CHARACTERS

Raika of Cimmeria (Angela) - Cimmerian Warrior
Makena of the Spotted Tribe (Ellie) - Balam Nubian Scout
Abiodun the White-Haired (Mark) - Atlantean Sorcerer
Iskander the Glib (Peter) - Tharshi Human Emissary
Ormarr the Short/The Red Fox (JohnK) - Halogan Thief and Dabbler

Game Date: Simanu 9th, year 506 Meta Kataklysmos (M.K.)

The Red Fox started off travelling with Raika, the Cimmerian warrior that I've known for a couple of years and have travelled with recently for some time. We're in the plains and woods north of Tartessos in Tharshesh, having left the city rapidly a couple of days back due to a poorly timed theft that went wrong. She and I talked about where we should go next, and while Cadaza and a ship out of Tharshesh was opined by me, Raika said she wanted to see a bit of the north of Tharshesh, perhaps go into Galacea and seek out some adventure. Our conversation was interrupted by a group of six bandits who attacked us. I quickly laid out the first two of the three bandits I faced, and fended off the third bandit, then laid out the third bandit as quickly as I could [spending 2 Hero Points, including a Water Hero Point on the attack]. My Cimmerian companion easily dealt with her three attackers. [I earned 3 Renown points.] We checked the bodies of the six bandits, but they were quite poor having nothing of value on them. With a shrug, Raika and I continued on our travels, resuming our discussion of where we were headed.

Several hours later, I informed Raika that we were being followed by someone or something through the woods we were in. She decided to set up a trap, so we snuck around a bit until we found a convenient area [I had a Critical Success on my Stealth roll] to enact our plan. Sure enough, we were rewarded when our pursuer entered the area, pausing to look for tracks. She was a spotted Balam, and we were able to catch her by surprise. Suspicious of us, she introduced herself as Makena of the Spotted Tribe, seemingly coming from Nubia, and that she was tracking someone (whom she wouldn't identify) down and her search had led her mistakenly to us. Raika and I introduced ourselves to her. Since we were all heading north, she agreed to accompany Raika and I on our journey. As we travelled, our senses alert to our surroundings, Raika, Makena and I talked, learning a little bit about each other. We learned that she was pursuing a potential lead on one of the individuals who had slaughtered her family some time ago.

Continuing through the forest on our journey, we came upon a wagon track that Makena thought might connect some of the small villages in the central and northern Tharshi regions. She found a relatively recent set of wagon wheel and horse tracks, and we decided to head in that direction. It was Makena who informed Raika and I that she heard what sounded like the clashing of weapons ahead of us, and as we approached closer, we could smell smoke. We came upon the scene of a caravan being attacked by what seemed to be robed figures armed with curving, snake-like weapons - Makena informed us that these appeared to be some cultists dedicated to Set! Two individuals still stood: a tall male whom I took to be Atlantean, wielding a staff, and what appeared to be a Tharshi diplomat armed with a curved sword. They were holding their own, but they were under attack by at least ten of the cultists. Raika, Makena and I immediately waded into the melee, and I found myself facing two of the cultists. Even with my speed, I was barely able to hold my own against the cultists who were quite skilled with their wicked looking swords. I took a couple of serious wounds from their attacks, having to call upon the Gods to aid me [spending 1 Hero Point to absorb 4 points of damage on one attack, and an Earth Hero Point to absorb 8 points on a second attack, and still took 4 points of damage in the fight]. When I was finished and recovering my wits about me, I saw that Raika and Makena along with the two from the wagons had killed several of the cultists, a couple of them managing to flee into the woods. [Kathy awarded me 10 Renown points for my efforts against the two cultists, and gave the others their Renown rewards.]

While I bound my wounds, the two newcomers introduced themselves as Abiodun, an Atlantean sorcerer, and Iskander the Glib, an emissary from Tharshesh. We talked for a few minutes as we looked over the bodies of what were indeed cultists of Set, and Iskander explained that they had come after him and the Atlantean due to something that he had done in his last negotiation. It had something to do with the Hesperians and the Gorgosians, but my familiarity with those lands is not all that good so I didn't grasp any of the implications of what Iskander was saying. Makena interrupted our "chit chat" to state that the two escaped cultists would likely return with more of the Settites, and that we had to go after them. Abiodun said she was right, and after he and Iskander gathered up their belongings such as were left, we all mounted our horses. Makena looked around, checking to make sure she had accurate information, and we started off in pursuit of the surviving cultists.

Overall, it was a fun night of gaming, and I rather enjoyed myself being on the other side of the GM Screen with Kathy running the game. I like the Atlantis: The Second Age RPG quite a lot, as most folks know, and it was a lot of fun getting to play again. Kathy had a pretty good time running the game, and I enjoyed the interaction between myself and Angela's Raika. The other player Heroes seem to be pretty interesting characters, and the set-up we've got to go after the cultists of Set is pretty decent. Kathy struggled a bit with the combat sequences, but I gave her help when she asked for it, and that made things go a bit smoother. I'm rather looking forward to continuing play in her game for a bit, and it's a nice break getting to play one of my favourite game systems.

I'm looking forward to the next game session. :)
