Once upon a time back in 216, I wrote
this post about running the
DragonQuest RPG. It turns out I was wrong.
When I wrote that post about my experience with the
DragonQuest RPG back in 2016, I was coming at it from a specific angle, but I failed to realize something. The appeal of the game system for me in those days and especially now is that it's an old-school fantasy rpg that can be run with either an epic or low magic feel. Part of how I feel about this now is that in this time of the COVID-19 pandemic and all, I've missed running a game that challenges me but I also am missing the traditional fantasy setting with all the trappings that would entail. Part of the latter may stem from the fact that I read a lot of fantasy that is atypical of the traditional, epic stuff, and part of me yearns for that game "feel" again. Another part of it comes from the fact that I realized I still love the Tactical Combat System, the College Magic system, the D100 game mechanics that have that old SPI wargame feel to them. It's not nostalgia, per sé, as I've come to realize; it's more about the style and the "feel" that the game has and wanting to challenge myself once more gaming-wise in ways that the
DragonQuest RPG gave me more than enough of in my younger gaming days.
It's been a long time since I've played an rpg face-to-face, due to the coronavirus pandemic of course, but I've been considering running the game on-line, using either Zoom or some other place like Roll20. We'll see how that goes, but for now, I'm in the process of gathering together all of my old
DragonQuest RPG game materials, starting to re-type up some of the old scenarios and other material that I've lot the computer files for, and finally putting scenarios together on computer that have only existed on paper for lo these last 40+ years.
And I have to tell you, I'm jazzed about running the
DragonQuest RPG once more. Can't wait until face-to-face gaming can start again! :)
