Sad, terrible news in the world of entertainment and game shows.

The terrific Sudbury-born quizmaster and host of Jeopardy!, Alex Trebek has died at the age of 80. Likely due to the pancreatic cancer from which he suffered for the last 18 months.

'People loved him': Alex Trebek Dies at Age 80

Alex Trebek, Beloved Jeopardy! Host, Dies at Age 80 of Pancreatic Cancer

Alex Trebek may not have been a person of note in lots of circles, but when it comes to caring about people, about the world, about democracy, there was no one else like him. Best known as the host of Jeopardy!, Alex Trebek paid his dues in the game show business and has a long resumé in the field. As the host of Jeopardy!, the Sudbury-born native and graduate of university in Ottawa - though he lived for a long time in the U.S. - educated and entertained with aplomb and humour, and may well have taught many immigrants to Canada English (according to their own testimony). He is a legend, and an icon. He was a superb human being.

I can't speak for others, but Jeopardy! entertained and educated me for a long time, and continues to do so, and is what instilled and inspired a desire for knowledge and a love of trivia in me. And for that, *THANK YOU*, Alex.

R.I.P. Alex Trebek (1940-2020). You fought the good fight. You're now in a better, painless place. And you are now in possession of the ultimate Final Jeopardy clue.
