RPGaDay2020 in August - August 30th: Portal

Aug 30, 2020 18:12

We continue on with #RPGaDay2020 in August.

This one's a bit later in the day due to other things that I was doing today - I was actually *running* a face-to-face rpg game session today! :)

Day 30 - Portal

A tough, tough prompt word for today. And folks are going to be disappointed with me about today's entry.

Portals or gateways in roleplaying games have never really done all that much for me. While I'm fond of the gateways in StarGate SG-1, the jump points in Babylon 5, the portals for star travel in Coriolis - The Third Horizon, and several others that I've encountered in fiction and a few roleplaying games, the gateway and portal just doesn't strike me as imaginative.

Sure, they can be used to travel between two points in space, can act as a bridge to the past (as it did in the Primeval tv series), can be used to travel to new worlds or even universes...they've always felt cumbersome. When it comes down to it, why create a portal in your game to a new universe or place when you had a perfectly good one, with lots of details already worked out for the game? I get a portal to a different place on the same world (such as can be done in the SkyRealms of Jorune roleplaying game, and several other rpgs I've played over the years), but...

Why are portals and gateways necessary in rpg? Honestly, I've got no clue.

And there you have this thirtieth post for this #RPGaDay for August, 2020. Comments, thoughts, questions, etc. are all welcome, of course. :)
