Last night, the Friday night gaming group continued their game campaign of the
Coriolis - The Third Horizon RPG. You can read about the previous
game session by following the link. This post is extremely long, so I've put it behind a cut for those who don't want to read about my roleplaying game campaigns.
CHARACTERS
Naima Saab (Kathy Bauer) - Trailblazer (Scout)
Hafisa dariRouash (Angela Marsh) - Pilot (Freighter Pilot)
Zouma Abid-Arif (Ellie Bauer) - Stowaway/Ship Worker (Engineer)
Tafik Sharoun (Mark Williams) - Scientist (Archaeologist)
Omar Mannash (Peter Johnson) - Negotiator (Peddler)
First Triad, Dancer Segment, Day 19, CC 58
Atoh Marif turns at the shout from Naima Saab, and as a result her tackle of him misses completely. The blast from an accelerator rifle strikes Atoh just off the chest centre, and he drops instantly, dead before he hits the ground. As various people instinctively run or seek cover, a second shot rings out. Naima and Tafik Sharoun both dive for cover, and the shot that was aimed at the former misses, striking one of the pillars to the entrance to the cantina. Naima attempts to find where the shooter is, and does so - he or she is up on the service catwalk some 30 metres above the plaza below [she spends 1 Darkness Point to do so]. She gestures up at the catwalk, indicating to Tafik what's going on, but before he can draw his Vulcan pistol, the running of station security sounds and the two player characters realize the figure is no longer on the catwalk. Keeping low, Naima goes up to Atoh to check on him, but confirms that he is dead. Station security arrives on the scene.
Hafisa dariRouash and Zouma Abid-Arif arrive back at the Ruby Flower, the former still fuming over Tafik's comments about Moustafa. As they enter the ship and head to the kitchen and galley area, Zouma talks to her about Moustafa, and learns that while they were friends/buddies, Hafisa felt a lot more than that for the gambler and peddler. She realizes that Hafisa was angry at Moustafa not at Tafik, and the two calm down somewhat over food and have a bit of kawah as well. The ship's intelligence, Scherza, interrupts them and informs the two that there's been an attack near Arib's Cantina, and that a man named Atoh Marif has been killed. they are upset, since they know that Naima and Tafik were going to meet with him. Hafisa has Scherza try to get in touch with either Naima or Tafik, but the ship informs them that communications are unavailable to that part of the station for the moment. Before they can leave the Ruby Flower, Scherza informs them that the docks are now in lockdown for security purposes. Hafisa fumes once more, while Zouma worries about her friend Naima.
As the people near Arib's Cantina dive for cover, after the attack from an accelerator rifle, Omar Mannash takes cover himself, still keeping an eye on two members of the Ruby Flower's crew and their companion. He notes the man is down on the ground and lying in a pool of blood, and cautiously makes his way over towards the man even as Naima is also going towards him. He hears the sound of approaching station security, and attempts to spot the shooter but is unable to do so. He reaches Naima just as the station security do.
Naima greets Lt. Daghda Karoutz and her two security officers. Karoutz explains they've been keeping an eye on the Ruby Flower's crew after the events of the death of Moustafa Harouz, and figured something might happen. While the two other security officers take charge of Atoh Marif's body and warn the public to keep out of their way, Karoutz learns from Tafik and Naima what happened, though Naima doesn't tell him about what Atoh told them about the card. When she finishes with them, Karoutz turns on the now skulking Omar, and asks him why he's been following the Ruby Flower crew around and why he did a computer search on them and the ship. Omar attempts to lie through his teeth [at the cost of a Darkness Point], but Karoutz sees right through that as does Naima. She tells Karoutz that the Ruby Flower's crew has an "obligation" in the matter of Moustafa Harouz, and though the lieutenant understands her position, she tells Naima not to interfere in the station security's investigation into the matter. As a courtesy, however, she does tell Naima that she'll let the Ruby Flower's crew know what she learns. Several more security officers arrive on the scene and begin investigations with the crowd, while a medical team arrives to take Atoh's body away for examination.
After Lt. Karoutz leaves them, Naima turns on Omar, and tells him to give them the real truth. Omar tells them that he is a merchant peddler from Dabaran who needs a job. He had heard that the Ruby Flower might be looking for a new trader, and was plannning to approach them at their ship but things have gotten a little out of hand. Naima and Tafik don't trust him, but tell him that he might as well come along with them since they figure he'll keep following them. Omar smiles and nods. Naima says they need to get to Atoh Marif's home before Lt. Karoutz and the station security do, as they need to find what he kept hidden there that he found on Moustafa's body. They head to the nearest computer terminal in the Aiwaz Station market, and Tafik accesses the system and finds the data [it costs him 2 Darkness Points]. They quickly head for a transport lift down to the station tech's quarters on Level -10.
Back on the Ruby Flower, Hafisa and Zouma have Scherza monitor the station feeds for any news about the attack at Arib's Cantina. There is no news, but some time later, Scherza tells the two women that there is an incoming message from Lt. Karoutz. The lieutenant is looking for Naima Saab (whom she has assumed is the Captain of the ship) and is somewhat surprised to hear that she has not returned to the Flower yet. In response to Hafisa's question, Lt. Karoutz tells her that she left Naima and Tafik quite alive when she last saw them. She asks Hafisa to give Naima a message: the weapon used to kill Atoh Marif was an accelerator rifle, and that the user was an expert marksman. Furthermore, there was some evidence from the footprints of whoever it was that might give them more information, but that will take time to be processed. Hafisa and Zouma decide to remain with the ship, as they have no idea where Naima and Tafik have gone, but she promises Lt. Karoutz that she will give them the information.
Naima, Tafik and Omar arrive on Level -10 of Aiwaz Station, the home of much of the technical crew and station support personnel of the station. It is somewhat dark and dank, but well maintained, though Naima tells the others that she learned there is a lot of crime on the station's lower levels. They stop a few people, asking where they can find Atoh Marif's home and learn what they need, while also handing out 10 Birr in "thank you" money. They enter an area of hallways where lights are burned out and the area is filled with shadows. Omar draw their attention to the fact that the lights are not burnt out, they've been broken [he spent a Darkness Point on the Observation roll]. They hear the drawing of weapons from sheaths, and then are approached by four individuals wearing ragged clothing who bear [dura] knives in their hands.
They demand the characters hand them all their Birr and any other valuables, and no one needs to get hurt. Naima demands to know who really sent them, but the street thugs deny that they work for someone else; they just want the characters' Birr and valuables. The street thugs charge to the attack. The fight with the thugs is short, and somewhat brutal. Tafik draws his Vulcan pistol, and attacks one of the thugs, injuring him quite seriously. Naima uses her Dura axe, and attacks another of the thugs, dodging out of the way of a third one, almost slicing the thug in two with the axe [she spends 2 Darkness Points, getting 3 successes for a Critical hit]. Omar uses his Mercurium dagger to defend himself against a third attacker, and manages to hamstring him [spending a Darkness Point]. Realizing they are outmatched, the street thugs retreat into the shadows. The player characters haven't even been hurt during the attack. They clean off their weapons as needed, and continue on towards Atoh Marif's home.
On reaching the Marif home, they find his wife, Adala, and a two-year-old daughter, Harra present. Talking to the other two, Omar convinces Naima and Tafik to let him do the talking. Doing his best to be gentle, Omar informs Adala of her husband's death, but convinces her that they knew him and that he told them he had found something on the body of their friend, Moustafa. Adala tells them that she thinks she knows what they're talking about and goes into the bedchamber, returning with what appears to be a playing card. Looking at the card, Naima and Tafik realize the card depicts a woman, possibly a courtesan, but with a long-handled dura blade, sitting atop a black lotus. They realize that this is a calling card from the Black Lotus of Ahlam's Temple. Omar says he has seen one of these before; the card is dropped on a victim of the Black Lotuses when a contract or debt has been paid. They ask Adala if they can take the card with them, and she is happy to see it out of her house, if it has something to do with why Atoh was killed. The characters thank her for her time, and take their leave.
As they emerge from the Marif home, they see a group of station security approaching on the main thoroughfare. Using the shadows, Naima, Tafik and Omar make their way around the home into one of the neighbours' dwelling spaces, and then start the long trek back to the Aiwaz station docks and the Ruby Flower. Naima tells Tafik that they've got the only resolution they could have about Moustafa's death, but that she doesn't think Hafisa will be all that happy with it. She places the Black Lotus card in a secure inner pocket of her jacket, and then moves off with the others. Omar asks her if she thinks there might be a job aboard the Ruby Flower for him, but she replies that he'll have to wait and see.
Friday night's session of the
Coriolis - The Third Horizon RPG campaign was a pretty good one, with a little bit of everything happening. There was even a fight, such as it was, that allowed Peter to get a feel for the combat system ("This is great!" he said). The session didn't have a lot for Ellie's Zouma or Angela's Hafisa to do, but the two played the various NPCs the characters encountered and had a couple of heart-to-hearts back on the Ruby Flower. There are still a few matters to resolve on Aiwaz Station, and the matter of Peter's character joining the crew. Not sure how that will get handled yet, but I'm sure it'll be...interesting. :)
Overall, a really good session of the
Coriolis - The Third Horizon RPG, and I'm looking forward to the next session of the game.
