Sunday Afternoon Game Report - Coriolis - The Third Horizon, Sessions 1 and 2

Mar 13, 2017 15:11

The Sunday afternoon gaming group played yesterday, and continued on with their campaign of the Coriolis - The Third Horizon RPG of Arabian Nights in space. You can read about the previous game session by following the link. This post is somewhat long, so I've put it behind a cut for those who don't want to read about my roleplaying game campaigns.

CHARACTERS

Dalal al Yousfana (SteveR) - Scientist (Technician)
Ziva dariBoukhari (Tammy) - Negotiator (Peddler)
Ithara Kalarash (NPC1) - Pilot (Freighter Pilot)
Palan Mumrabh (NPC2) - Soldier (Mercenary)
Skot Habibar (NPC3) - Ship Worker (Dock Worker)

First Session
First Triad, Dancer Segment, Day 10, CC 58

The players begin with an introduction to the universe of the Coriolis - The Third Horizon roleplaying game, learn some of the basic mechanics of the game, and proceed through the Third Horizon universe Glossary. After that, they partook in several samples of combat that taught each of them the basic mechanics of the science fantasy "Arabian Nights in space" game. While the combat system for the game isn't deadly like some, death can be a mere critical injury away.

Second Session
First Triad, Dancer Segment, Day 10, CC 58

The place: The Third Horizon. Coriolis station, in orbit of Kua. Approaching the station. The time: The first Triad, the Dancer Segment, Day 10 of Coriolis Cycle (CC) 58. The universe of the Third Horizon is full of adventure, intrigue, and even the mundane life for those who seek it - but for those who don't, secrets may be revealed, the Darkness Between the Stars may be faced head-on...

The light freighter Ahlima's Hope is approaching Coriolis station as it prepares to dock at the Neoptra spaceport. Dalal al Yousfana is working in engineering keep an eye on the various systems. Captain Ziva dariBoukhari is on the bridge, eyeing the work of Ithara Kalarash as she brings the ship in to port. Skot Habibar is in the cargo hold, doing some work there. No one has seen Palan Mumrabh since they started in towards Coriolis station. Ithara brings the ship into the spaceport and to dock 4-B without a scratch, and after a conversation with Dalal starts to power down the ship. Ziva can see that various station personnel are moving towards the Ahlima's Hope outside. Ziva asks the ship's AI, Savitra, where Palan is. The ship informs her that the gunner is located in the arboretum.

As the player characters go through docking procedures and post-flight checks, several of the crew inform Ziva there are some problems with shipboard systems. Skot tells her there are some problems with the cargo storage devices, and these need repairs; he estimates costs with labour to be around 15,000 Birr. Dalal informs her that the port rear landing strut has buckled, and will need to be replaced; a new one will run around 5,000 Birr. Palan, who has arrived on the bridge at the ship AI's request, suggests that they might find a good deal for the strut in the Ozone Plaza on the station, or perhaps the Cellar. Skot says they really don't want to deal with the "merchants" in The Cellar on Coriolis; it's the sort of place where you bring a carbine with you, and an escort for protection. Ziva nixes the idea of getting the part in the Cellar, and says that they also have to take repair time and the cost of a repair crew into account. To make matters worse, Ithara tells her that the onboard sensors indicate that fuel tank B-2 is cracked. Ithara says this explains why fuel expenditure on the run from the portal to the station was 28% above expected expenditures. She estimates they can patch the fuel tank for around 6,000 Birr, but a new one would likely run 13k Birr (with labour). When Ziva asks what she recommends, Ithara says that a new tank would be better than just fixing the old one. The Ahlima's Hope is getting old. Ziva totals up the repairs and the docking fees, and she's not pleased with the numbers that come up. Skot asks if she's going to send him to negotiate deals for the parts and labour they need, and Ziva says that she is, but he's got to take Dalal with him, as he's the ship's engineer. Skot doesn't look happy about this, but agrees to do so and arrangements are made.

The player characters [and the NPCs] prepare to depart the ship, Skot and Ithara staying on board to take care of a few things. Emerging from the Ahlima's Hope, they are greeted by a wall of noise (from ships, work crews, and unloading, among other things) and the smells of the spaceport - ranging from fuel, to the sharp tang of metal, to the smell of unwashed personnel. They are met at the ship's port by a customs officer, and three of the Coriolis Guard, armed with stun batons and Vulcan pistols (and one of them is armed with an accelerator rifle). The customs official introduces himself as Nehali Absolon, and welcomes them to Coriolis station. After checking out Ziva, Dalal, and Palan, he says he's impressed that their pilot was able to land the ship with the damaged landing strut. When he learns that the pilot is Ithara Kalarash, he's impressed, saying she has a "good reputation". [She gains 1 Reputation point.] He also informs the captain that one of their crew, Skot Habibar, will be arrested on sight; he has a criminal record, with several warrants out against him. The captain and her personnel exchange glances, and say that they understand. Absolon leaves the three Coriolis Guard at the area of the ship, to emphasize the point, and then the characters proceed through the three security check zones.

After going through security and then being welcomed to Coriolis again, Ziva, Dalal, and Palan emerge into the heady smelling, loud and cacophonous Spice Market. As they get their bearings, a voice calls out to them, and the three turn to face a seeming beggar wearing an an ancient somewhat smelly set of clothes. He calls out, asking if it's really Ziva, and she is shocked to recognise Hariman darMansour. He was part of one of the great families of Dabaran, that fell out of favour over some weapons deals. She remembers him giving her fig and date sweets, and how he wiped her face and mouth when she was a child. Hariman's mouth waters at the smell of some sort of meat or veggie pies coming from a nearby seller, and he begs her to take her for a bite of food. As they move towards the food vendor, Ziva feels a tug on her caftan, and suspecting foul play at hand, looks down to see a small street urchin tugging on her caftan. He begs her for alms, but she doesn't have any birr at hand. She offers instead to get him some pie(s) at the vendor, and he's delighted at this prospect and moves off with them and Hariman.

Dalal notices someone watching them, leaning on one of the pillars in the Spice Plaza. He is a dark haired man wearing a dark green and yellow djellaba, with a weapon of some kind [mercurium sword] concealed by an overvest at his waist. He has a tattoo on his right cheek, but Dalal doesn't recognise the symbol. He points the man out to Palan, who doesn't recognise it either, but says that the man's got a mercurium sword at his waist. When the man sees that they're watching him, he moves off into the crowd.

Sunday afternoon's game session of the Coriolis - The Third Horizon campaign was a lot of fun, and I had a good time running this. (I've included here the notes for the 1st game session as well, from the week(s) before, just for completeness sake.) The players seemed to enjoy themselves, though things went a bit off the rails as Tammy was on call for work and had a bit of a crisis at one point, so we only played for about 3 to 3-1/2 hours. I was glad to actually start the campaign, and gave the two players a bit of the feel and flavour for the game during the course of play, so that was enjoyable as well.

I'm quite looking forward to running the next session of the Sunday Coriolis - The Third Horizon campaign, and can't wait! :)
