One of the things I've promised myself for 2017 is to play rpgs more, rather than GM them.
Don't get me wrong, I love GMing, and am looking forward to some of the games that I'll be running in 2017, but I just want to be a player more this year than I have in the last 10 years or so. Playing gives me a rest from doing all the creating of gaming stuff entailed with running games and it allows me to re-energize the gaming creativity juices that running the games drain away, slowly but surely. The real plus about playing, however, is that it allows one to experience games from the other side of the GM Screen, and get a bit of perspective about running games and the players that one (usually) plays with.
I'm off to a good start this year, currently playing in DavidM's Sixcess Core fantasy game and
spross's Thousand Suns science fiction game, but I'm hoping to play in a few other games in the gaming groups this year, and that I'll play in stuff at both
CanGames 2017 and at
GenCon 50.
While I'm currently running the Continuum game with the Wednesday gaming group, the playing in the other two games has given me something of a break in terms of running and creating. It's quite...tiring, at times, to run stuff on the three gaming groups as I usually do, so this is an interesting break period of sorts.
