Wednesday Night Game Report - DragonQuest Character Creation

Feb 04, 2016 14:11

Last night, the usual Wednesday night gaming group met up for gaming purposes. Since they had wrapped up their Chill 3rd Edition some weeks ago and had created their characters for the Fvlminata: Armed with Lightning characters last session, I figured we'd be playing the latter last night. Such was not the case. Donna informed me that the group wants to play fantasy, and were ready to create their characters for the DragonQuest fantasy rpg. Since I've been working a lot on the game of late, I was pretty much ready and willing (not to mention happy) to go along with this.

Once the players all showed up for the evening, a little before 7:00 pm, we talked for a few minutes about Real Life(tm) over the past couple of weeks, and when everyone was settled in, we got down to business. I started off going through some of the basics of what the game rules for DragonQuest are like, and re-assured the players that there's no math really once play starts; Both Donna and Kendall were re-assured about this. We then talked about the game world that I'm going to use for the campaign - Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea as well as the work on Alusia that I've done for the game over the years, and then I answered a slew of questions from the four players about various aspects of the character sheet stuff, the game mechanics, and a few other details about the game world that they were curious about. Character generation in DragonQuest is relatively simple, aside from the wargaming and mathematical aspects of it, but I figured that we'd need the full evening session to get the characters done. The players were quite eager to do their characters up, and so that is what we did.

I have to say, the evening was an interesting one, with the players having a relatively good time of character creation, and came up with an interesting mix of player characters.

Donna - Usually one who knows what she wants, Donna hemmed and hawed a bit, but finally settled on an interesting character. Renna Tilawan is a Gontishwoman who wanted to see the world, and became a guide and a bit of a sailor.

DavidW - David was pretty ready to do some fantasy, and elected to play Savar Breikal, a lad born in the Barony of Carzala who was a man-at-arms for one of the Barons, but who found a life of adventure was more what he wanted.

Kendall - She struggled somewhat with her character, getting a bit overwhelmed by the mathematics, but decided to play Kavra Devaris, a traveller and something of a cartographer who's pretty mean with a short sword.

Crystal - She's playing the Mage of the party, Arabela of Semulia, an Enchantress with a penchant for red gemstones, who is competent at what she does, but sometimes plays the fool.

I was pretty pleased overall with the player characters that the Wednesday night players came up with, though there were some tense moments. Only DavidW didn't want to play a Mage, but the girls realised they needed a good variety of character types and settled among themselves who would play the Adept in the group. They'll make for an interesting mix of characters, and both Crystal and David were thrilled at how relatively easy it was to create the character, despite the seeming mathematical obstacles in front of them. I'm looking forward to seeing what sort of personalities the players bring to the table with these characters, to be sure.

All in all, it was a good night of character creation. And I just love me some DragonQuest! :)
