Last night, the Friday night gamers continued to play in their
Chill 3rd Edition RPG campaign. Here are the game session notes. You can read about the previous session of the campaign in this
journal entry. This blog entry is somewhat long, so I've put it behind a cut so that folks who don't want to read any detailed rpg posts don't have to.
CHARACTERS:
Alexandra "Alex" Scott (Kathy) - Television Journalist
Carole LaFlamme (Angela) - Bookstore Owner
Constable Andrew Harkness (DavidM) - Police Officer
Jennifer Upton (Ellie) - Sophomore University Student
Doctor Jason Harris (Mark) - Doctor
March 13th, 2014 (Thursday)
Jennifer Upton returns to her dorm room at Carleton University, and does a little bit of homework. She calls Alexandra Scott, who has returned to the tv station to prep several stories for the evening broadcast, and tells her what she, Carole LaFlamme, and Andrew Harkness have learned. Alexandra is surprised to hear that Dierdre may not be dead, and tells the student what she and Jason learned about Dierdre. Jennifer tells her to hang on, and attempts to do some research about Dierdre. She tells Alexandra that she's learned the same information [she failed the check]. Jennifer and Alexandra both agree there's something they're missing about Dierdre, but can't figure out what.
Constable Andrew Harkness returns to the precinct, and decides to do a bit of research himself about Dierdre Connell and her case. His research gets him nowhere, but he decides to see if there's a connection between David Williams and Dierdre Connell. He determines that there's no connection between the two, other than that they both live/lived in Prescott House, and is suprised to learn that.
Carole LaFlamme returns to the bookstore, and Karl is annoyed that she left him to run the store with their help for most of the afternoon. She apologises to him, and says that she'll make it up to him later. He tells her that her friend, Alexandra Scott, called and said she wants to talk to her as soon as possible. Carole calls Alexandra, but is told that she's doing On Air stuff for the evening news.
Dr. Jason Harris heads over to LaFlamme Books, arriving just as they're getting ready to close down for the day. He tells Carole what he and Alexandra learned, and she reacts with a bit of surprise, telling him that she thinks Dierdre may well be alive... Jason, in a moment of insight [he rolls a PCN Colossal Success, turns a Token Light], asks if she might be *in* the painting. Carole says that's an interesting theory, but that if she is, that would explain her disappearance. She adds that, in that case, she has no idea how to free the girl given what she and Jennifer learned about Muse Demons.
The rest of the evening and the next day go uneventfully, the player characters dealing with everyday stuff and life. Around 2:00 pm, Alexandra calls Carole and asks if they can all get together for supper. They have matters to discuss. The various player characters agree to do so. That night, the player envoys meet up at the Olive Garden restaurant. They engage in a long discussion about matters, and come to conclude that they need to go and deal with the painting. When Jennifer asks how they intend to deal with the Muse Demon, Carole tells her, "The way we always do...we improvise, and beat the Unknown creature!" The player envoys set off for Carleton U. around 9:30 pm.
Arriving at Prescott House, the player characters descend down into the Carleton U. tunnels, and make their way cautiously towards the area where the mural is located. Andrew uses his official demeanour to make sure that no one comes down into the area, though the campus security guard is somewhat suspicious. When they arrive at the mural, Jennifer looks at it closely [she achieves a High Success], and realises that one of the figures in the mural bears a striking resemblance to Dierdre Connell. She points this out to the others, who are somewhat horrified at the realisation. [They make Horror Resolve checks, with Minor Trauma. Alexandra suffers -5 to WPR; Carole suffers Minor Trauma, losing -10 WPR; Andrew turns a Token Dark to gain +10 to the TN, and loses -5 WPR; Jennifer suffers no Trauma at all; and Jason suffers no Trauma at all.] Jason attempts to Sense the Unknown [and turns a Token Dark for an automatic success], and detects the creature's presence in the mural, as well as other life forces. The players are a bit surprised to see that the figures in the image are moving, but have come to expect this after Jennifer's earlier revelations.
Alexandra shouts, calling on the Muse Demon to show itself. The creature appears to the players, taking the form of a paint stick figure from the image in the mural, and tells the characters that they cannot stop it. Carole tells it they know how to defeat it, and with that she attempts to punch the creature [turning a Token Dark, to gain +10 to the TN giving her a Low Success], causing it some damage. It laughs a high-pitched laugh, and Andrew attempts to strike it, inflicting a more telling blow to it. The creature uses its Wound Discipline [turn 2 Tokens Light] and strikes at Andrew, causing him a deep gash or three [suffers -10 STA], and the creature laughs, telling them they can't hurt it, not really. Dashing away from the others, seemingly in fear, Jason goes over to one of the maintenance areas in the tunnels near Prescott House. He picks the lock on the door [turning 2 Tokens Dark, for a +20 to the TN, and getting a High Success], and grabs out a fire axe and a shovel.
The rest of the player envoys back off from the figure, some of them now covered in red, green, and yellow paint, and Jennifer asks it what it wants. The creature tells them, "To live!", but Jennifer says that with Jacob Hess dead, it has lost its muse. In a rage, the creature strikes her with its Wound Discipline [turning 2 Tokens Light], inflicting a deep laceration [she takes -20 STA]. Jennifer collapses from the pain, and Alexandra and Carole hurry over to her. Andrew attacks the creature again, inflicting another Serious Injury to the creature. It screams, and fades away, returning to the painting. Jason arrives back on the scene, and tosses the axe to Andrew.
Perceiving what he intends to do with the axe, the creature attempts to freeze Andrew in place [using the Halt Discipline, turning a Token Light, but failing to do do so], and Andrew strikes the mural with the axe, cracking it. Jason simultaneously strikes it with his shovel, and mars the mural somewhat more. As Andrew strikes the mural with the axe a second time [he rolls a Colossal Success, and turns a Token Light], the paint on the mural begins to run and smear...and the faint outline of several young people, including Dierdre Connell (Jennifer recognises her, and crawls over to where she is), start to appear in the tunnel. The creature appears before the characters again, screaming for them to stop, its cries echoing in the Carleton tunnels. Jason strikes the mural again with the shovel [and rolls a Colossal Success, turning a Token Light], and the creature begs for mercy. As the mural smears into a swirl of reds, greens, yellows, and browns, the forms of the victims imprisoned in the mural solidify, as the creature fades from view, screaming a vow of revenge. And then two campus security arrive, along with a detachment of police - led by Constable Bradley Clarke.
The next several minutes are somewhat dicey, but between Carole's persuasive abilities and Alexandra's charm and promises of a good story, Constable Clarke and the security officers are able to make some (mundane) head or tail of what's occurred, with a bit of slap and dash by the player characters. The recovery of six students (including Dierdre Connell), security guards, and maintenance people (missing people that the characters didn't know about) mitigates the harsh feelings of the law enforcers.
Two days later, Halle Whadjat congratulates the player envoys for their work and a job well done, even if it was handled a bit more publicly than SAVE would have liked. She tells them that SAVE has people in certain professions that will help mitigate the story, turn it into a more public consumption friendly tale, and she hopes it will be forgotten about within a few months. She says the various students and Carleton personnel who were imprisoned in the painting by the creature will be helped to recover from their ordeal, although they are finding that it was strangely surreal. She tells the characters that they handled themselves quite well, dealt with a relatively rare creature of the Unknown, and seem to have emerged from the experience relatively unscathed. She tells the characters to take a few days off, and see about getting their heads "straightened out".
After Halle departs, the player envoys eye each other. Jennifer says that it'll be good to get back to normal, student activities, but that she'll be keeping an eye on Dierdre Connell for a bit. Carole says that she needs to get back to the bookstore, and make it up to her husband, Karl. Andrew tells them that a regular beat will sure be a good antidote for dealing with the Unknown creature in this one. Jason says that he's going to take a couple of days off before he gets back to the hospital, as there's someone he's been neglecting. He thinks he really loves Natalya, but doesn't tell them about the unique feature of her son, though Alexandra has her suspicions. Alexandra says that she's got to get back to covering some mundane Ottawa news stories, but that she first owes a Religious Studies professor a story about what happened to Helen Johnson...
Friday night's game session of the
Chill 3rd Edition campaign was a really good one, and a solid way to wrap up the case the player characters were involved in. This game session of Chill had a little bit of everything for the various characters, saw the players engage in some truly lovely roleplaying, and saw the resolution and answering to several questions, but leaving a few more stone unturned (no pun intended). The players told me that they really enjoyed themselves, and had a great time with the game - and are looking forward to the next case their characters get involved with.
Overall, a good night's session of the
Chill 3rd Edition game campaign, and a great way to end the current adventure. Looking forward to the next scenario with the Friday group.
