Finally, the Wednesday night group played their second session of the
Abney Park's Airship Pirates post-apocalyptic steampunk rpg that I'm currently running. You can read about the previous game session in this
journal entry. This post is quite long, so I've put it behind a cut so that folks who don't want to read any detailed rpg posts don't have to.
CHARACTERS
Jane Harrowsmith (Donna Winston) - Neovictorian Rebel
Harrison "Harry" Osprey (David Winston) - Neobedouin Shaman
Marion Gale (Kendall Scott) - Skyfolk Con Woman
March 14th, 2150 AD
The next morning dawns bright and cool, and La Scene Bleu sets herself adrift, before she begins the short run to Ceruleville. The player characters and the rest of the crew engage in a rehearsal of "The Trials of Mortimer Hypocrates", while First Mate Bobbie Jo pilots the ship. During the rehearsal, both Harrison Osprey and Marion Gale are amused to note that there appears to be some chemistry between Captain Jean-Marc Letresse and Jane Harrowsmith as they play out the leading roles. After the rehearsal, Jane spots Janice Bluestand, an avid supporter of hers, but before she can find out how Janice got aboard La Scene Bleu, the woman disappears below decks.
Several hours later, as La Scene Bleu approaches the community of Ceruleville, Bobbie Jo informs the crew through the grapevine that Ophelia's Harp is docked at the town. Captain Letresse informs Jane of this, and asks if she can handle being in the same place as her rival, Rachel San-Denis. Jane says she's got no problem with San-Denis at the moment, as long as her rival doesn't get in her way. Bobbie Jo and Marion talk, and the First Mate gives the Quartermaster a large list of supplies that she and the Captain require her to purchase. Bobbie Jo also tells Marion to keep an eye out for anything suspicious and not to get into too much trouble in Ceruleville. She can take "Dreads" with her to keep an eye on her, as the First Mate trusts the Neobedouin to make sure she doesn't get them into any trouble in Ceruleville.
Jane debarks the ship at the first opportunity, and heads for the Ophelia's Harp, watched by her back-up Mandy Summertide, who goes and tells the Captain that their lead actress has gone to visit her rival. While Captain Letresse doesn't see any harm in the "healthy" rivalry, he sends a couple of the ship's air sailors, Marcel Armandis and Jason Winterstorm, to keep an eye on her. Jane reaches the Ophelia's Harp, and is met by a couple of air sailors who don't recognise her. She gets to see her rival, Rachel San-Denis, who informs her that the Harp is also there to perform a play, and that she'll be taking the lead in it - as Proserpine, the lover of Count Malgondo, one of the most desirable roles in "The Count of Malgondo". Green with envy, Jane is able to not show her feelings to her rival, though Rachel suspects, and as she leaves for the Scene Bleu, San-Denis taunts her some more.
Marion and "Dreads" head for the Ceruleville Grand Market, the two bantering and talking about various matters as they go. Arriving at the Grand Market, Harry discovers that a Neobedouin tribe, the Blue Salmon, are in Ceruleville. Marion tells him that she needs to start purchasing and gathering the supplies that Captain Letresse and First Mate Otter have requested. Harry tells her that he's going to try and talk to some of the Neobedouin merchants, and see if he can learn the lay of the land and how things stand in Ceruleville. The two go about their business. Marion struggles to make her deals for supplies, as several of the merchants in the various stalls give her a hard time, notably Haqim Johannes and Flardos Berrymer. Johannes is downright rude to her, and Marion gets into a knife fracas with him, but is forced to withdraw as several of Johannes's mates come on the scene. Confronted with several of the merchant's friends, Marion gets some relief when Jeremy Firehawk (the assistant engineer of the Scene Bleu) and Thomas Abrunewood (one of the set designers for the troupe) arrive on the scene, making the odds more even. Haqim Johannes and his friends back off, but the merchant warns Marion that it's not over with. With the aid of Jeremy and Thomas, Marion completes the rest of her purchases, and then hires several porters from among the Carigg clan to deliver the goods and materials back to La Scene Bleu.
Meanwhile, Harry (using the name "Dreads") heads for the Neobedouins, and find that there are two tribes present in Ceruleville - the Blue Salmons and the Yellow Pines. He finds the two tribes mingling together, as they sell at the Grand Market but also deal among themselves. At first suspicious of "Dreads", both tribes greet him as a "lost" Neobedouin (from the Red Sprat tribe), and Harry doesn't disillusion them on this score. Kathleen Blue Salmon, one of the tribe's traders and a fine leather maker, takes a more than cursory interest in "Dreads", much to his discomfort, but Harry makes good through the connection. Daniel Yellow Pines, who seems interested in Kathleen, doesn't approve, and tries to pick a fight with "Dreads", but Harry doesn't press the point, much to Daniel's disapproval. He taunts Harry as "Dreads" moves off to talk to some of the other tribefolk, but Harry gets a feeling that the Yellow Pines' member will be watching him. After a bit of time, Harry learns the lay of the land these days in Ceruleville. The town governor, Merle Desjardins, has recently instituted a new tax, a "Living Tax" on the citizens, though he has cut trade import/export fees by 10%. While there's no revolt coming up, the people of Ceruleville are not happy about matters, but the local guards, nicknamed "les Cerises", are keeping the peace as best they can. Trade is good in the town, but the big event that folks are talking about is the performance of the two plays being put on by the crews of La Scene Bleu and Ophelia's Harp. There is even talk that both crews are going to attempt to sabotage each other's play erformances. As Harry gets ready to make his way back and find Marion, a voice says, "Harrison Osprey, as I live and breathe...".
Returning to La Scene Bleu, Jane sees that she's got some admirers... or she's being followed. She can't tell by how many she's being followed, but spots at least three people. As she arrives near the Scene Bleu's docking/mooring area, several of her shipmates, including Margie Freewind and Dall Verson, two of the ship's cargo handlers and workers, join her, along with Marcel and Jason, brandishing weapons. A group of Skyfolk, some seven in all, emerge from the shadows of the nearby structures, and advance on the crewmembers of La Scene Bleu...
As can be seen from this particular journal entry, there was a lot going on in this session of
Abney Park's Airship Pirates, and it was at times a bit much for me to keep a handle on everything. That said, I really enjoyed the game session last night, and the players and their characters got to do all sorts of different and interesting things, and there were even a couple of small fights as well that proved to be unique for me for various reasons.
The players enjoyed themselves tremendously, and there were several puns made during the course of the game session, notably Harry/"Dreads"'s "red herring" line! That had me tearing up with laughter from the sheer brazenness of it. Donna, David, and Kendall all agreed that it was a really fun session of the game, much more entertaining than the first session back in early October, and they agreed to continue on with the game and see where it goes, rather than changing system as had been discussed at one point.
I'm rather looking forward to the next session in two weeks, weather willing. :)
