Yesterday's Nasty Business in Ottawa

Oct 23, 2014 10:46

Yesterday was, to put it bluntly, a bad day.

For those who must be living under a rock or some such, here's some of the headlines of the today about yesterday's events.

Day of Chaos in the Capital Leaves Soldier and Terrorist Dead

The Day After: Ottawa Gunman was Acting Alone, Police Confirm

I was sitting at work, doing my job and getting ready for a business meeting, when I was told that the building was in lock-down and that there had been an act of terrorism that seemed to be escalating. We were told to stay inside, and that all cell phones and the like had to be turned off, and a bunch of other things. I won't say where I'm working from, but we were on the edge of what became known as the "perimeter zone", so for the rest of business day, it was listening to the radio, and trying not to be all that worried about people I know and so forth.

Suffice it to say we didn't get the okay to leave the building and go to our homes until around 3:45 pm, and so I finally made it home after going through security checks and the like around 4:30 pm.

My condolences go out to those who lost loved ones during the events of yesterday. My thoughts are with you.

That said, I have to wonder what this means for the future of access to Parliament Hill and the associated environs in the city. And I have to wonder what new security measures will be taken in Ottawa after yesterday's events, given that terrorism has now come home to roost in this wonderful city...

personal, ottawa, bad day
