Broadchurch Thoughts 6 (No Spoilers)
As mentioned in an earlier post today, I managed to stay up last night and watch the six episode of Broadchurch that aired on Showcase Canada.
This sixth episode of the series was, to be honest, one of those parts of a good mystery where things take several twists and turns that are not so much unexpected, as seemingly out of character. But as with all such great episodes, they are pivotal to the story at hand (in the case, the murder of Danny Latimer), and offer some interesting new revelations about the plots that are twisting and tangling with each other.
This episode was partially about the healing process that the Latimer family is undergoing, and really evolved these characters more as they deal with their grief at Danny's death and his loss. It was also about the town starting to heal as well, though it's still a raw nerve with many of the folks who populate the story. At the same time, Episode Six had new clues about Danny's death coming to light, motivations for his murder being explored a bit more, and some other lovely bits that I'm not going to discuss here (as I'm trying not to spoil it for folks who haven't seen it!).
While DI Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) are still the focus characters of the show, I have to say that I'm still glued to the tv with my eyes by the supporting cast (it hardly seems fair to refer to them that way, honestly), notably the actors playing the Latimers. One of the actors who has surprised me has been Arthur Darvill (of Rory fame in Doctor Who), who is playing Reverend Paul Coates, the vicar of Broadchurch. This six episode really highlighted Arthur's acting chops, and was revealing about his character, but more importantly made him a force to be reckoned with (not that Hardy hasn't had his suspicions about the Reverend up until now).
The episode ended with a lovely cliffhanger (got to wait until next Sunday to see how this resolves!), and just highlights how superb the writing and directing in Broadchurch is. Am really enjoying the series so far, and looking forward to seeing how the final two episodes ramp everything up and reveal who the killer is.
