It's the day before Thanksgiving and it is rainy, gloomy and I have zero motivation. Are you stuck in an office like me, destined to get nothing done? Are you on a bus or a train? Are you home and stir-crazy? Are you just generally bored out of your mind? Then come and play ( Read more... )

i'm here to be told, whatever remains however improbable

Frank keeps a bottle of whiskey in his desk drawer and he has his hand on it when his office door bursts open, and a guy in a dripping wet trench coat and bowler hat rushes in, closes the door behind him and backs himself against it. He's an inventor, ok, and someone just stole his invention, and tried to shoot him, but he narrowly got away and he doesn't think he was followed here but he needs help.

Frank had to fire his bookkeeper (Dewees) and he's late on the rent for his office (really late) and he's more of a "you think someone's cheating on you" kind of detective with the occasional "hire me to shake down some tough guy who owes you money" deal. He's not prepared for stolen inventions or dripping wet inventors, but a case is a case. So he tells the guy, Gerard Way of Way Industries, to have a seat. He closes the whiskey drawer with a shove (nothing works in this place) and asks why the invention was worth stealing.

Gerard goes all tight-lipped and shifty eyed and won't say anything other than it's a major discovery in the field. He won't even say what field. Frank wants to know why Gerard came here, of all places, not to the police, or a fellow inventor in the "field" or anyone other than a down-on-his-luck private dick (!) who was about to close up for the night (and maybe the rest of the week.)

Gerard says he's Frank's neighbor, his workshop is right across the street and he's seen Frank's sign offering "investigative services" and maybe sometimes he watched Frank's silhouette as he paced in front of the window and then - There's a huge explosion outside, and the windows behind Frank rattle and crack. Frank ducks and peers up over the windowsill - there's fire coming out of all the windows in the six-story brick building across the street, smoke in the air, sires in the distance, the rain still coming down in sheets.

Gerard is suddenly at Frank's side at the window, looking out. The explosion seems to have come from - Frank doesn't even need Gerard to say it - Gerard's workshop. Frank's in way over his head.

Ooh, I love it. You've gotten so good at mysteries, and this one would clearly be tantalizing. All the possibilities of Gerard the inventor! What is his field? Does he scribble little scientific notes and doodles and leave them everywhere (and drive Frank crazy)? And poor, put-upon, not-so-Great Detective Frank! I would read the hell out of whole epic stories with them (oh dear).
