I want to be a comfort to my friends in tragedy

I'm making chili for dinner and it makes me want to watch The Crackpots and These Women from the first season of The West Wing. It's one of my favorite episodes, if I can actually have favorite episodes of a show that also caused me so much grief. This episode has Josh acting emotional and crazy. It has the President entertaining like the Oval Office is his living room. It has Toby angsting, and Zoey, and Charlie, and it has CJ drinking a glass of wine and leaning in the doorway of Josh's office and telling him he's really sweet sometimes, as they both listen to Ave Maria. It has a plot arc, and an artful pairing of silliness and seriousness that both come together for a happy ending, and it's just as good, every time I watch it.

I have TiVo set to record a few episodes of Friends every week, for when I want to aimlessly watch tv. There was a surprisingly sweet moment in one episode, where Joey hides The Shining in the freezer when it gets too scary. Joey dares Rachael to read it when she makes fun of him, and she in turn dares him to read Little Women. Joey inadvertenly spoils the end of the book for Rachael, who then gives away the end of Little Women. At the very end of the episode, the last two minutes that come back on after the first credits, Joey comes over to see Rachael, and says, almost in tears, "Beth's really sick!" Rachel says, "Joey, do you want to put the book in the freezer?" And he just nods.

Despite being away on Family Business this weekend, I managed to catch Battlestar Galactica. It wasn't my favorite, and the moral dilemma didn't seem as dire because I knew there was going to be a way out. And that way was Helo, acting like an idiot. That's becoming a downright theme: on this show, love makes you do stupid things.

Finally, I've been meaning to say that I'm playing around over on Vox with an entirely non-fannish journal, and it's good fun. If you're on Vox (and doing something more than just using it to reserve your lj name or what have you) send me an email and let me know who you are.

love makes you stupid, better angels of our nature, in search of a master narrative
