So classes started today... which I was SO glad about. The class I had today was a little disappointing though... well more like a lot disappointing. It's called "Women and Religion: a global perspective" but when we begin to discuss what we will cover I come to find out that it will only be covering the abrahamic faiths. This is not what I expected/wanted and was not mentioned in the course description. Too me I think having people from around the world commenting on just these three faiths is not a global perspective on women and religion... but maybe that's just me. I've had this professor before and she's very good, and I'm sure the class will be interesting... but it isn't really what I was looking for. I typically do not take classes that are solely on western religions because they are usually taught very differently than those of eastern religions. They tend to be much more skewed and also assume you have a lot of general knowledge of their religious texts(and are more often than not full of very religious people unable to think objectively about the topic) Apparently it's news to them that not everyone that takes those classes are of those faiths. Eastern religion classes on the other hand assume that they are speaking to a class full of judeo-christians and so it is taught in a much more factual and accessible fashion. I'm not sure if I will continue with this class... depending on how the rest of my classes go and how my load appears I may just drop it. Take something next semester that I will enjoy more... who knows.
