They sat soundlessly, staring into the distance. Other guys ran around tossing footballs, studying on benches, sprawled across tables as their friends laughed. It was a peaceful afternoon; the sun was shining, making it warm, though not so warm as they would have to ditch the Dalton uniforms completely; instead, they’d just shed the jackets and rolled up the sleeves of their shirts up to their elbows, as had most of the others. James, a fellow Warbler, tripped as he was trying to intercept a football, and David helped him up as the other guys laughed playfully. It was all good fun, after all. Everyone was at ease, and nothing would go wrong that day, as always at Dalton Academy. Everyone was happy, though none as happy as Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson.
Their fingers entwined as they sat on the quaint little picnic blanket, their legs stretched out in front of them. A basket say untouched between them; it contained two sandwiches, two bags of potato chips, two apples, 2 bottles of water, and some cookies that Kurt had baked and slipped in without Blaine knowing. He wanted it to be a surprise. The picnic had been planned ahead of time, but once they got outside, eating was the last thing on their minds. Relaxing sounded a lot better.
The French books they had intended to study from when planning the picnic had long since been discarded off to the side; they just sat there on their picnic blanket, as they listened to Kurt’s iPod, providing a soothing soundtrack to their afternoon. Well, if you can even call Lady Gaga and show tunes soothing.
A Katy Perry song (which Kurt had downloaded solely for Blaine, who loved Katy; he couldn’t help but gag at her horrible vocals) faded out, and a new song came on. Blaine looked down at Kurt’s iPod, which displayed the song: ‘Lucky’ by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat . Kurt blushed madly and looked at his feet. It was kind of embarrassing, he thought, that that song in particular would come up at a time like this. For some reason, it was immensely awkward, and he considered reaching over Blaine to change the song. Just when he was about to, Blaine spoke.
“I love this song!” Blaine said softly, grinning.
“Really?” Kurt asked, eyebrows raised, meeting Blaine’s glance. It didn’t seem like the type of song his boyfriend would listen to.
“Yeah, it’s kind of…well,” Blaine said, starting to look embarrassed as he, too, looked down at his feet, “It’s kind of the song I associated with us before…you know…”
Kurt’s heart just melted. If that boy got any more perfect, he feared he’d be joining his mother and little Pavarotti in their graves soon, because he might have just died of a heart attack. Okay, maybe that was over-exaggerating just a bit, but Blaine was really too sweet to handle.
“It’s really cheesy, I know. But Kurt…I am so lucky I’ve found you. Every day I spend with you is another day I can be happy for once. I’ve never loved anyone like I’ve loved you, and…I just feel so blessed that you love me, too.” He said, a serious expression on his face as he looked at Kurt with affection.
Kurt smiled softly. “I feel the same way.” He said, nodding, though it sounded completely lame. He felt really bad that he couldn’t think of anything else to say. Here he was, sitting next to (and holding hands with, at that!) this perfect guy that made his heart sing and his spirits soar, and he couldn’t think of anything to say besides just agreeing with the beautiful words that had just come out of his mouth. How lame. He stared off into the distance, feeling guilty that he couldn’t upstage Blaine on this one, that he couldn’t show that his love was just as strong.
“Hey Kurt,” Blaine asked softly, after a few moments of awkward silence that burned through Kurt like a laser. He looked up to see Blaine looking at him lovingly, a twinkle in his eyes.
“Yes?” Kurt asked quietly, giving a small, meek smile.
“Can you sing this with me?”
