The door turned, this time a minute or so earlier than usual. Harry had been trying to put a bit more effort into these appointments, his trip to Maui doing more than soothing things with Skylar. It had relaxed him, too, made him really take into consideration what was absolutely important.
And he found that, perhaps, therapy was a lot more than he thought it would be.
When he saw Megan, he nodded his head in greeting.
She was thrilled to see the knob turning precisely a minute and thirty-seconds before he was due to arrive.
"Good morning, Harry," she said brightly, trying not to reveal her nerves.
Her fingers released their tight grip on his file and pointed toward the seat in front of her desk, "Please, take a seat. I want to talk with you for a moment before we start today."
His brow furrowed as he took in her demeanor, wondering if there was something wrong. She might be a therapist, but he'd been trained for years in body behavior. And something was tense.
But still, he didn't say anything.
"Morning," he said, a genial smile on his face. "What's up?"
"We're going to try something new today," she said with weight on every word. Megan crossed her ankles tightly under the desk to keep herself from bouncing her feet as she watched Harry take his seat.
She pushed her mouth to one side, then shook her head at herself, and broke out into a smile, "I think you might protest, but I'd like you to keep an open mind."
"Alright-" he said the word slowly, drawing it out as he looked at her with confusion. This was starting in a completely different way than he was used to.
Divination wasn't a fan of him, more like it. It seemed as if any time he'd ever attempted the subject his untimely death was right around the corner. He made a slight face, looking up at Megan as if he was a child being made to eat his vegetables.
"Right- well, um, I guess? I don't suppose I have any say in the matter so I guess we might as well-"
Hesitation was fine, Megan was used to that, but it was much better than she had thought Harry would react. "It's settled, then," she said closing his folder neatly and placing it in the filing cabinet behind her desk.
As she opened the door, she paused and turned back toward Harry, "Death predictions aren't my usual way of introducing the practice."
With that, she opened the door fully and waited for Harry to take his usual seat at the table.
He rose from his seat, a snarky burst of laughter catching in his throat at her joke. Were therapists even supposed to make jokes? At a patient's expense? He narrowed his eyes at her as he followed her into the room.
But before he could say anything, the decorations caught his attention.
She had to lighten the mood, a little. They were both tense and that is quite the opposite experience she liked to provide for her clients.
"I find there's actually a reason for it," she said smiling and carefully taking her seat. Megan explained, "The dimness lets the mind open up and not be distracted by the environment. You can focus on what's going on in front of you without distraction. The incense is for relaxation, to soothe the senses. The decor," she looked down at the tapestry, "Well, it does help with the mood."
Once Harry was seated, her self-serving tea set went to work as usual.
Megan began sipping on her tea, "I wouldn't call myself a seer, and I honestly never see much but my reflection in the crystal ball."
She placed the tea cup back down onto its plate, "I use the techniques, but interpret them a little differently. This is still a therapy session, not a psychic experience," she said smiling, hoping that the explanations would help him reserve his judgment.
"We'll do tea leaves before you leave today, but I thought we'd start with Tarot cards." With that, a deck of cards floated off a nearby shelf and placed itself in front of Megan.
He looked down at the stack of cards that landed in front of them, Harry becoming increasingly more interested in where this was going. This was something he'd never experienced before. He honestly didn't even know that witches and wizards even used tarot cards.
"Alright-" he said, leaning forward, letting his elbows rest on the edge of the table.
Megan picked up the yellowed and highly used cards and began to shuffle them, swiftly and quietly for a few moments, a serene look replaced the smile on her face. She treated the deck with great care and clearly had control over the cards.
She placed three cards face up on the table between herself and Harry: The Fool, Page of Wands, and the Two of Pentacles.
He was a bit fascinated by what he was seeing, though he wondered how a bunch of worn cards could do much more than give anyone a sneeze. He swallowed, watching as the cards landed on the table in front of him.
He leaned in a bit closer, lifting out of his seat slightly as he read the faded titles.
"The Fool, Page of Wands and the Two of Pentacles-" he read aloud, his brow furrowing as he looked up at Megan. "Right, so- what does this all mean?"
Megan looked at the cards thoughtfully, taking a few moments again to study the cards.
She placed the remaining cards on the table beside her and used her index finger to point to the first card. "The Fool is somebody that may have been used as a pawn," she pushed her lips to one side of her face once again.
"It is placed in your past, so, perhaps, you have felt like a playing piece in the greater scheme of things, or unable to control your own fate."
Megan glanced up at Harry as if to ask, 'how do you feel about that?'
And he found that, perhaps, therapy was a lot more than he thought it would be.
When he saw Megan, he nodded his head in greeting.
"Hey-"
