Title: "Because We Are... - Chap 7"
Author: J.J.
Warning: It's an AU BASED ON THE MANGA. It contains some Japanese words, a bit of sappiness...
Notes: Okay, this born by my obsessive love for seeing Seishiro and Subaru as teenagers interacting together.

Summary: What could happen if a teenager Sakurazukamori is forced to co-habit with a teenager Sumeragi no TouShu?
Two weeks had gone from when Seishiro and Subaru reached ‘an agreement’.
Seishiro knew Subaru-kun was still uncomfortable with the whole mess but the boy didn’t protest anymore and so Seishiro decided Subaru-kun’s feelings over the topic didn’t matter. Besides he was being gentle with the boy, preparing him food, singing for him lullabies and even talking and joking with him so Subaru-kun couldn’t really complain. What bugged Seishiro was the fact the boy still kept obstinately distant. Anyone else would have been completely charmed and won over, Subaru-kun instead kept being shy and… afar. He never asked for something, on the contrary he seemed always hesitant in accepting Seishiro’s attentions and, despite smiling always he just… didn’t interact.
While on a side it was quite useful it was starting to make Seishiro feel rejected. Why wasn’t Subaru-kun searching for his attention like anyone else? Subaru-kun had a crush on him… so why didn’t he act accordingly? Why didn’t he try to make moves on him? Okaasan never had problems taking what she wanted he remembered with a frown.
Okaasan.
He… disliked to think about her. It was just… she was in his past. He wanted to live his present and in it there was no space for her.
Absently he took a cigarette and lighted it. Smoking was another thing an Onmyouji shouldn’t do. Seishiro didn’t care. He worked just fine. Subaru-kun always looked at him with a sorrowful expression when he smoked but never dared to say anything.
“Do you want one too?” Seishiro had asked him one day. Subaru-kun had shook his head.
“No, thank you.”
“A good, little Onmyouji like you don’t smoke?” Seishiro had wondered. Subaru-kun had smiled, even if a bit sadly.
“Obaachan would kill me if I were to try. Hokuto-chan too,” he explained.
“So? They’re not here. You sure you don’t want to try?” Seishiro asked handing him the cigarette he was smoking.
“It’s not important if they’re not here. It’s not important if they don’t find out. I would know I’ve disappointed them. Lying… it’s not fair. And hiding something is just the same,” Subaru said quietly. “For Obaachan… is very important I’ll be a good Onmyouji… and Hokuto-chan… she’ll worry… smoke is bad for the health, you know…”
“So you won’t do it for them. What about what you want, Subaru-kun? You shouldn’t do things for others. You should also think at what you want,” Seishiro pointed out tipping the cigarette so that the ash would fall in the ashtray.
“I’m doing what I want. I want… them not to be displeased,” Subaru-kun had explained. Seishiro frowned not fully understanding the connection between Subaru-kun’s feelings and those other people’s feelings. They were… other people, not connected to Subaru-kun. Why should he care? But Subaru-kun did.
That silly boy was always carrying for everyone, always feeling the pain of everyone.
But who cared for Subaru-kun?
His grandmother was more concerned with his being an Onmyouji than anything else. His sister was far and anyway Subaru-kun took great pain to hide from her all his troubles, because evidently he didn’t consider wrong to hide ‘them’ to her. Who else remained? Classmates and teachers didn’t care at all about him. Who else Subaru-kun had? No one as far as Seishiro knew. And yet… even knowing he could demand attention from Seishiro… he never asked for it, never, smiling at him in the same way he did to everyone else. As if there was no difference at all. As if he too was another innocent soul he happened to interact with and not the Sakurazukamori. And not his housemate. As if for Subaru-kun they were all the same. Seishiro didn’t know how to feel about it if he had to feel at all.
Despite all his work to blend with other teens he’d never been like the others. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to be like the others. Not to Subaru-kun at least. He was pouring too much efforts over that boy and Subaru-kun knew who he was and what he was capable to do. He deserved a bit more consideration from him than anyone else.
He tensed as he heard the key being turned. He knew it was likely just Subaru-kun but habits were hard to die. Subaru-kun hadn’t showed up all the day and had likely skipped lunch and breakfast. Maybe Seishiro should make him Obento too…
Distractedly he moved toward the door and saw the boy enter silently and rather slowly. Subaru-kun looked absolutely miserable, completely soaked, worn out and even had a nasty gash on his cheek and yet, as soon as he saw Seishiro, smiled at him and greeted him as if nothing was wrong. As if he wasn’t in pain at all. As if admitting to Seishiro he had troubles wasn’t worth the effort.
It wasn’t a matter of pride, Subaru-kun just never deemed important his troubles, never worth to share. His pain was his and his alone to bear and no one else could help him while he always tried to help everyone else and somehow Seishiro felt irked by all this.
“So? How did it go?” he asked in a careless tone.
“Oh… the exorcism was successful,” Subaru-kun reported as he removed his boots and placed them in the Getabako. “Thank you for retrieving my homework for me,” he said then, seeing the sheets over the Getabako. “I’m sorry you had to go through all the trouble,” he added smiling gratefully. Seishiro shrugged as he leaned against the wall, his arms crossed on his chest.
“So, have you changed your mind about lies?” he asked in a careless tone. Subaru-kun blinked in confusion.
“It’s real I’m really grateful about…” he began to say.
“Yes, yes, you’re always grateful,” Seishiro cut him. “You know, that’s what people hate about you. You just keep smiling that pretty smile of yours and saying nothing is wrong when everything is and cutting everyone out of your life as if they were idiots.”
“I don’t mean…” Subaru-kun tried to protest, hurt clearly shining in his green eyes, but Seishiro interrupted him.
“You don’t? Of course you do,” the boy continued in a mocking tone smiling at him cruelly. “Everything must depend from you, doesn’t it? And if things don’t go the way they’re supposed to it’s your fault. And you’ll bear all this weight so stoically. Mere mortals like us aren’t allowed to know what’s going on in that little brain of yours. Our small brains wouldn’t understand… You’re like me after all. You don’t really care about anyone. None of us is worth your confidence, your trust. And that’s why you’ll be always hated by others and you know it.”
“I simply don’t want to trouble anyone!” Subaru exclaimed, raising his voice for once, then he immediately lowered his head bashfully. “Sorry…” he whimpered quietly in a pain-filled tone hugging himself and trembling slightly. “I didn’t mean… I… sorry… I’m so sorry…” he babbled, wishing he could cry but refusing to do so because he really didn’t want to trouble anyone. Seishiro-san’s hand rested on his cheek gently and forced him to raise his head and meet the boy’s gaze. Seishiro-san’s expression was different from before, it was almost understanding and that confused Subaru further.
“You can cry if you want to. Or aren’t you even capable to do this anymore when you aren’t alone?” the boy asked him softly.
“I… I don’t want to trouble anyone… I don’t want to trouble you… I didn’t mean… I’m sorry I’m so… I didn’t mean to make you hate me…” he whimpered still refusing to shed his tears. Seishiro-san’s hand left him and he returned to gaze at the floor again, feeling abandoned and discharged. He felt startle when Seishiro-san’s arms went around him pulling him against the boy’s chest and holding him tightly, almost possessively.
“Silly, Subaru-kun. I don’t hate you. I don’t care about people, remember? That’s why you can cry and laugh and do whatever it pleases you around me. My judgement over you won’t change,” the boy whispered right in his ear.
“But I… I don’t want to trouble you… or annoy you… or everything else… I… I… I’m so sorry I’m such a horrible person… I…” Subaru stammered without even making an effort to free himself. Right then he didn’t feel like he had the strength.
“Aren’t you listening to me? I don’t hate you, Subaru-kun. You’re not a horrible person,” Seishiro-san whispered in a gentle and almost seductive tone, his lips brushing Subaru’s ear and Subaru had no idea why he felt so much relief as Seishiro-san said so, he only knew his eyes filled with tears and he began to weep clinging to the other boy, sobbing and repeating ‘I’m sorry, please don’t hate me…’ over and over.
Seishiro grinned satisfied as he rubbed Subaru-kun’s back knowing he had just carved a hole through the boy’s defences and planning to use it fully.
A hour later Subaru awoke while lying on the couch, his head resting on Seishiro-san’s lap the teen’s fingers trailing in his hair soothingly. Subaru blinked and looked up at him. Seishiro-san’s eyes left the television he was watching and met his, then the boy smiled warmly.
“So, did you wake up?” he asked. Subaru blushed, realizing only then the compromising position they were in, and tried to move away, even if his body was still groggy, slow and clumsy for his sleepiness. Seishiro-san’s smile widened then the boy helped him to sat up and… and then pulled him to sit on his lap.
“Seishiro-san!” Subaru protested, blushing wildly but without making a real attempt to escape from that predicament.
“Yes?” Seishiro-san asked him in an innocent tone, his arms wrapping around Subaru, pulling him even closer, causing Subaru to blush even more if possible.
“Seishiro-san, that’s so… improper…” Subaru said, his whole boy tense in the other teen’s hold.
“Relax,” Seishiro-san breathed in his ear, returning to brush Subaru’s hair. “There’s no one else here to watch us and you need to learn to relax a little around me. Besides it doesn’t bother me to hold you. On the contrary you’re quite… snuggable…” he observed as he snuggled closer, his tone amused.
“But… but… but…” Subaru stammered feeling himself reduced to a boneless, blushing being. He shouldn’t let Seishiro-san take so much confidences, he shouldn’t… but he had already allowed the boy to go too far and… and in a fashion he liked it… he liked to be held close by that strange boy that had told him such cruel things and than had comforted him effortlessly, as if hurting him and comforting him were just the same for him.
“Relax,” Seishiro-san repeated and he just sagged completely against him, blushing cheery red, feeling scared, nervous and very prone to cry and yet… a side of him only wished he could clung to Seishiro-san, bury his face against the boy’s chest and… and Subaru just couldn’t understand why.
“Seishiro-san…” he whimpered helplessly, feeling also ashamed of himself. He was the Sumeragi no TouShu… what would his grandmother say if she were to find out about that?
“Relax. You’re safe with me,” Seishiro-san whispered again straight in his ear, in a tone no one else had ever used with him, causing Subaru’s heart to beat even faster as the boy pulled him even closer and… “So, what would you like to have for dinner?” the other asked cheerfully and the abrupt change in his tone and the new topic he had picked up confused Subaru even more.
“What?” he asked, sure that wasn’t what he expected Seishiro-san to say and feeling strangely… disappointed.
“What. Would. You. Like. To. Eat?” Seishiro-san asked him really slow, pausing at each word but still looking at Subaru with an amused expression.
“I… I don’t know… I’m not hungry, really…” he replied.
“Subaru-kun, we have decided you’ll have to get rid of this anorexic act of yours,” Seishiro-san stated, looking at him as if disappointed as he made Subaru stand up all of sudden, causing Subaru to feel rejected.
“Sorry…” he replied lowering his head in shame. Actually he hadn’t decided a thing but he didn’t feel like telling that to Seishiro-san. “But it’s not an act… I’m really not hungry and…”
“Even worse,” Seishiro-san stated without looking at him as he stood as well. “You’re supposed to eat regularly and since I’ve spent all the afternoon slaving in the kitchen to cook for you, you’ll do better eat what I’ve prepared,” he continued and Subaru could only nod in reply as he followed Seishiro-san in the kitchen. It came to his mind that, if Seishiro-san had already cooked the dinner then his question about what Subaru wanted to eat didn’t really made sense and that knowing how good Seishiro-san was at cooking and how simple was the dinner he had prepared he couldn’t have ‘slaved out’ all the afternoon but he didn’t dare to voice it out loud. He just… wasn’t good at arguing with others, he admitted to himself nibbling at the food until Seishiro-san reproached him, forcing him to eat larger portions. He gave a quick glance at Seishiro-san and then decided he didn’t understand him at all. The boy was taking care of him… but he was doing it in such a weird, confusing manner, Subaru didn’t know how to react. His… ‘fascination’ for Seishiro-san didn’t help.
It was odd but he absolutely didn’t want to fail in the boy’s eyes, worried for his opinion way more than he had been for Hokuto-chan’s or Obaachan’s and something inside him relished for each scrap of attention the boy gave him. Yet… he felt even shier and clumsier than he had ever felt before when Seishiro-san was around. It was… very distressing. And, even if he had resigned himself to it, it didn’t help at all that Seishiro-san kept pretending to sleep with him each night.
Don't grumble silently, please let me know what you're thinking of this!
