Title: RESCUE - the Coast Guard Remix
Genre: AU, gen
Pairing: None. Maybe TegoMass if you squint.
Rating: G
Summary: Massu is a rescue swimmer (and 4 other members of NEWS are part of the coast guard, if you read the extra.) Inspired by the 2006 film, The Guardian, that was showing on cable tv last night.
A/N: ...I haven't written in a long time. :/ Warning, I fail at describing Massu's smile and writing endings.
Tegoshi can't quite believe that this is happening to him. He clutches the metal railing above his head tighter as the floor lurches dangerously beneath him, pulling his knees in closer to his chest and tucking his head down, eyes squeezed shut, in a futile attempt to protect his body from the onslaught of the next huge wave that crashes over the small boat he's crouched in the corner of.
This was definitely not what he had been expecting when he accepted Nagase-sempai's invitation to spend a day out at sea on his brand new yacht.
The day had started out well; Tegoshi had been thoroughly enjoying the sun on his face, the salty sea breeze whipping through his hair and the tasty treats Nagase-sempai showered on him when the storm came upon them suddenly, stirring the calm sea up into the biggest waves Tegoshi had ever seen in his life. The change was so sudden and drastic, Tegoshi wonders if the earlier part of the day had just been a hallucination. Now, he feels like he jumped straight into a Hollywood disaster film. He really hopes that this one doesn't have sharks.
When he feels a hand on his shoulder and looks up at an impossibly cheerful and bright smile, Tegoshi thinks he's hallucinating again. He stares as the teenage boy attached to the blindingly bright smile shouts over the thunderstorm, "Hi! I'm Masuda from the Japanese Coast Guard, I'm here to help you!"
The words take several seconds to register in Tegoshi's brain. Then, he notices that while Masuda looks as young as, or possibly even younger than himself, the other is indeed wearing the orange uniform of the Coast Guard, and that his surroundings are suddenly a lot brighter, lit by the harsh light of what he realises must be a rescue helicopter spotlight. He sags in relief that help has finally, miraculously arrived, but then remembers something very important.
"N-Nagase-sempai! He's hurt! He fell against the side of the boat, really hard - " Tegoshi cranes his head around the rescue swimmer standing in front of him, looking around wildly for his companion.
"Shh, it's okay, my colleague's with him. You're both going to be fine." Masuda soothes, as he grasps Tegoshi firmly but gently under the armpits to lift him up. "Can you stand?"
Tegoshi nods dumbly and lets himself be lifted to his feet, stumbling and automatically latching onto Masuda's upper arms for support when the boat lurches beneath them again. The storm continues to rage fiercely around them, but when Masuda nods at him encouragingly and smiles that sunny, dimpled smile again, Tegoshi feels hope flare warmly in his chest and believes that he's going to get out of this ordeal safe and sound.
- End.

Masuda gives his left glove a final tug and wiggles the fingers on his left hand experimentally. Beside him, Yamapi shifts into position by the open door of the helicopter and submits to a final safety check of his gear by Koyama. In the cockpit, Nishikido's expression is grim as he grapples with the controls, concentrating on keeping the helicopter stable. His co-pilot, Shige, twists around in his seat to face Masuda and Yamapi. "That yacht's gonna capsize soon," he yells. "We've got ten minutes, tops. Hurry!"
Masuda nods and Yamapi flashes a thumbs-up at Shige. "Yosh! We're going to save those guys!" He cheers.
Koyama smiles despite the worry in his eyes, and nods fervently. "Un! Do your best, Yamashita-kun, Masuda-kun!"
