Abandoned Places - Main Street, Old Louisville - Part 1 of 2

Here’s another gem from the past I’d forgotten about. Several years ago, while visiting family in the area, I took my daughter to explore a series of buildings in downtown Louisville I was surprised to see derelict. They were only a few blocks away from the YUM Center (Basketball arena) and in an area that had been full of clubs.

Walking down the alley behind these buildings we spied an unusual sight

Notice the tree growing out of the fire escape?

In all honesty, some renovations had been started, but it seemed to be more of an after thought

In the back of one building were two beautiful stained glass panels. This one was intact.

In the early 1980’s, the City of Louisville, KY commissioned a local artist to make these super hard tiles to show what historic businesses had been located on Main Street - distilleries

From the 1860’s to mid 1930’s, this alley would have been full of carts, wagons and trucks, hauling materials and products from the backs of the businesses here.
