Abandoned Places - Florence to Madison, AL (Summer 2010) - Site 6

As we moved past Athens, I noticed a complex of industrial buildings that seemed out of place near miles of farm fields. Then I realized this was a raw cotton mill. Many of these closed in the US during the 80’s and again in the late 90’s when cheap cotton from overseas and Mexico.
It’s almost bound to the ground
A large cotton hopper
Raw cotton bulges out from the broken hopper
Some rots on the concrete pad below
The truck tractor has seen better days
I didn’t check out the cab since it reeked of urine
Near the forklift was a small storage shed which was accessible and filled with personal items of the current/former owner
We couldn’t get into the main building due to thick undergrowth. We may try to go back before the spring brings new weeds and vines.
