Saw this photo and had to look up history of the sign. Wikipedia had a great exposition on it. Seems it was originally a real estate developer's advertisement, which later became a cultural icon; dropping the last 4 letters as part of making it unrelated to the developer (and relevant to the entire city) @ Hollywood Sign
