Someone's Alien

Ever feel like you just don't belong? I'm sure you do. I'll share my tale and we can feel weird together.

The one thing that I've always noticed about me that seems entirely un-human is my desire not to be noticed.  I like the occasional attention from close friends and family, like everyone else, but I severely hate a large amount of attention. Especially if it is unwarented.  I'm not sure anyone else is like this...

Did anyone not want to be famous as a kid?

I don't understand the need for attention in our day and age.  Sharing your talents and ideas is great, but there's a point where pushing yourself forward is simply for limelight.  Even being rich is all about money.  To a certain point, money is about security, but after that its all about whose car has the bigger helicopter pad on top.  If you don't have 20 people in your house, you don't need 20 rooms...

I've never understood this...

It's a very American outlook on life, but its not realistic.  We can only really be well known by so many people and we can only be remembered for so long.  We live in a period of time where the population of humans is 6 times higher then it has ever been.  For most of human existence, there were consistently 300,000 to 1 million people at any given time.  And access to other groups of people, so it was easy to stand out in your community... nowadays... the world has exploded.  You can talk to any one of the 7 billion people on earth and they all have something to say.

There are too many people... some people can stand out from the huge crowd (at least for a little while) but it seems to be an extremely futile effort.

I understand wanting respect, and you can get that easy with the people you find important, by just being yourself.  What I can't understand is the fight for everyone's attention.  I used to have a few friends that I was embarrassed to take out to dinner because it would suddenly become an attention fight.  I don't get it... what does it matter that a group of people you will never know personally, and who couldn't care less about you, know your face and name?  How will that help or hurt the world at large?

Recently, I've noticed people that cannot stand to see people focus on anything but them. They want to be the best and the greatest at everything... its good to have ambition, but seriously...  Work for the good of the earth because you care, not because you want everyone to like you, or to know you.  Understand that as soon as you achieve a goal or break a record, someone has been born who will beat you and do something better... that's life and progress.

You can lie to yourself all you want, but everyone is trumped eventually.

Even if you are remembered in a text book or movie credits... you should be proud, but your work will be what is remembered... not really you and your character and your heart...

That will only be remembered by the people that really know and love you. The ones that don't need your constant attention grabbing.

In the end, the sun will explode and there will be no one left to remember us anyway so... why stress so much to be noticed?

(PS: I find that last part refreshing... hope it doesn't depress anyone)
