Psalm 55

Sep 01, 2005 10:59

I was reading the Bible and came upon the book of psalms. I found psalm 55 and it automatically relaxed me. It comforts me to know that God will be with me no matter what, even if every human being on this earth were to desert and condemn me.

Listen to my prayer, O God
do not ignore my plea
hear me and answer me
My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught
At the voice of the enemy,
At the stares of the wicked;
For they bring down suffering upon me
and revile me in their anger.

My heart is in anguish within me:
The terrors of death assail me.
Fear and trembling has beset me;
horror has overwhelmed me.
I said, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest-
I would flee far away
and stay in the desert;
I would hurry to my place of shelter,
Far from the tempest and storm."

But I call to God,
and the LORD saves me.
Evening, morning and noon
I cry out in distress,
and he hears my voice.
He ransoms me unharmed
from the battle waged agaist me,
even though many oppose me.
God, who is enthroned forever,
will hear them and afflict them-
men who never change their ways
and have no fear of God.

Cast your cares on the LORD
and he will sustain you;
he will never let the righteous fall.
But you, O God, will bring down the wicked
into the pit of corruption;
bloodthirsty and deceitful men
will not live out half their days.

But as for me, I trust in you.

Question: "What does the Bible say about worry?"

Answer: The bible clearly teaches Christians to avoid worrying. In Philippians 4:6, we are commanded, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God". In this Scripture, we learn that we should bring all of our needs and concerns to God in prayer rather than worry about them. Jesus also teaches believers to not worry. He encourages us to avoid worrying about our physical needs like clothing and food. Jesus assures us that our Heavenly Father will take care of all our needs (Please read Matt. 6:25-34). Therefore, we need not worry about anything.

Since worrying is not a necessary part of a believer's life, how does one overcome worry? Let's see what God has to say about this matter. In 1 Peter 5:7, we are instructed, "cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you". God does not want us to carry around the weight of problems and burdens. In this Scripture, God is telling us to give Him all of our worries and concerns. Why does God want to take on our problems? The Bible says because He cares for you. That's right, YOU. God is concerned about everything that happens to you. No worry is too big or small for His attention. When we give God our problems, He promises to give us His peace which surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7).

If there are worries in your life today, I encourage you to give them to Jesus. Jesus says, "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light" (Matt.11:30). Will you accept His invitation, right now? Jesus is only a prayer away.
