Word Check

People, is it really so hard to look up a commonly misused word to ensure that you're using them properly?

Today's Lesson: Insure/Ensure/Assure

Insure: to guarantee in against a monetary loss
Ensure: to make certain
Assure: to state convincingly

Yes, these are related concepts. No, they are not interchangeable.

Assure is the least likely to be mixed up in this grouping since most people seem to get the concept that it refers to actual speech. Insure is frequently used in place of ensure, and it makes me twitch every time because I keep going, "Really? You've put money down on this concept?" Is ensure really that hard? Has our vocabulary as a nation become that pathetic that you don't even realize these are separate words?

Please, please, please. My poor brain can't take much more of this abuse!
