Dabbe Falls, Kanoor KoTe - Oct 25, 26 - 2008

Nov 01, 2008 17:48

The beginning:

"So, where shall we go this weekend?", I asked Bhatta.
This is how it starts every weekend. And we try to come up with some nice place each time.
Our options were running out. Between us, we had covered a lot of the Dakshina Kannada, Chikmagalur region.
(Actually, most of it done by him).
So, looking for a change we decided to go to one of the Sharavathi valley treks.
None of us had been there except to see the majestic Jog falls.
Since Kanta had been there a month ago, we decided to pursue the same route that he did.

The plan and the team:

The plan was to go to Hosagadde, a village near Jog falls and trek to Dabbe falls from there.
Head off to Kanoor the same day and reach there before dusk.
Camp at Kanoor or stay at some villager's house there.
Head off to the Kanoor KoTe the next morning. Trek down from the fort to Gerusoppa and return to Bangalore.

The team: Bhatta, Naveen, Kid, Harshu, Deepak, Manu and me.
Transportation: Qualis.

Rain rain go away...

Bangalore had been suffering from heavy rainfalls for the last 2 days.
It decided to play some havoc on our starting day as well.
With the water droplets crashing down from early evening, our departure got delayed by a couple of hours.
Add to that, the heavy traffic jam on Tumkur road and we couldn't have got off to a worse start.
Resigned to the fact that we would be late for our trek, we settled down cozily in our Qualis (atleast Bhatta did).

Day One:

We reached Sagar at around 8 in the morning. Had a quick breakfast and unanimously decided to visit Jog falls
which wasn't on our itinerary.
Since I hadn't seen the Jog from its top view near the british bungalow, we decided to go there.
There wasn't much water in Jog. So, we could comfortably go to the place where Raja falls and get a good view from there.

We immediately hurried to Hosagadde from there which was about 25 kms from Jog.
At Hosagadde we were picked up by Manjayya Jain, the owner of Dabbe mane on whose property the Dabbe falls exists.
It was an hour's walk from there to Dabbe mane which was stretched by 30 mins because of us photography enthusiasts
finding good scenaries and snakes on the way.

Learning from our previous mistakes, me and Bhatta have decided never to put off eating.
So, we decided to eat before we went to the falls. Good village food that!
And after eating, we have learned that we must take a nap. So, we did.

It was 3:30 by the time we all got ready to go to see Dabbe falls.
The descent to Dabbe falls is really steep and extremely fun! I was wondering throughout how it would have
been if only it was more slippery.

After half an hour's toil, we got our first view of the falls.. And what a falls it is!
It is one of the best water falls I have been to.
A great view, scope for getting into the water, water gushing on you from great height, it has it all..
After spending a good hour playing in the water, we decided it was time to leave.
Another 30 mins of steep climb and we were ready to leave..

Our plans of trekking to Kanoor had been dashed by our late departure on the previous day and our visit to Jog falls.
So, we decided to go to Kanoor by Qualis instead.
We halted at a village called Biligaru where we got some accommodation and good food as well.

Day Two:

We left at 6 the next morning. (Gotcha! When have we ever left at 6?)
We left Biligaru after having breakfast by around 9.
There are milestones mentioning Kanoor KoTe from Biligaru itself.. Must be some big place we thought.
We reached Kanoor by 9:45 and found that our Qualis could go no further on the jeep track. So, we trek!
The only problem was that there was nobody in sight and we didn't know the route from there.
Logic! There are milestones to this place.. It must be along the jeep track itself.
So we trekked along the jeep track ignoring the multiple diversions which came our way.
As our luck would have it, we were on the right track! (Gotcha again!)

After about 2 hours of walking, we found a large house in the middle of nowhere.
We asked them for directions and the lady of the house told us to continue along the jeep track for a small distance.
We would reach a junction of three roads near a small guDi (shrine).
The one going straight would go to the fort, the one to the right to Gerusoppa and the one to the left
would lead to some place whose name i did not catch.

We found the guDi, we took the straight road but immediately saw that it branched into two.
A small path going a little to the right and the main jeep track continuing on the left.
The jeep track had got us this far. We could not abandon it.
We found that the jeep track intersected with the left path... Hmm.. Suspicious. Never mind. We toil on.

After around 45 mins we realised we were on the wrong track. Darn! Never mind.. Lets have lunch here.
You remember that small path going a little to the right? Yes.. That one is correct.
We finally reached Kanoor KoTe around 1 PM. There was nothing much to see there.

Some villagers later told us that there's a huge temple if you trek 1 km in some direction from the fort.
Maybe next time..
Since time was of essence, we left immediately towards Gerusoppa.
Gerusoppa is around 12 kms from Kanoor KoTe. Around 3 hrs of walk.
We encountered a super bridge on the way built to cross the stream.
And finally reached the Sharavathi river which we had to cross by a wobbling boat to reach our Qualis.

As the rest of us sat and admired the sunset at Sharavathi, Bhatta, Harshu and Deepak decided to go for a swim.
The waters of Sharavathi will never be the same again.

With the usual stops on the way back for stuffing ourselves, we reached Bangalore by 6 AM on monday.
Incidentally, it was a Diwali day and it stopped raining in Bangalore!

Photos can be found here, here, here and here! (Loads of us with cameras)
