Title:  MT Company

Chapter 1:  Between ME and New MTs
(Between medical editor and new medical transcriptionists)
Pairing:  KibumxKyuhyunxDonghae

Chapter 2:  Between 2 New MTs
Between 2 New Medical Transcriptionists
Pairing:  KanginxSungmin

Sungmin just finished his pre-medical course.  He decided that he needed one year of rest before starting the medicine course.  But then his bestfriend, Ryeowook, dragged him to a MT company saying "Let's apply together!!!"

Naturally, Sungmin said "No."  He wanted to rest, not to work.

"B-but... I don't know anyone!! I'm scared!!!"

"You're going to make nice new friends."

"But I want an old friend with me while taking the tests and all. Pleeeease!!!!" Ryeowook pleaded with his very pitiful tone of voice.

"Fine.  I'll apply but if I do get accepted, I'll just reject the offer."  Sungmin sighed as he thought of all the things he had to do for being a supportive bestfriend.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Sungmin arrived early.  The second to arrive looked like a bully with his body built, shaved head and silver stud on his right ear.  Sungmin wouldn't even be surprised if the guy had tattoos hidden under the clothes.  "What's your course?"  Sungmin asked as the guy sat beside him.

"Nursing."

"You don't look like one."  Sungmin instantly retorted.

The guy didn't look offended, just amused.  "Let me guess what you're thinking.  Rad-tech? Med-tech? OT?"

"PT because you get an excuse to touch people and you seem to have a bit of a perverted streak on you."

The guy laughed.  "There's a lot of touching involved with nursing too."

"Ah, no wonder you chose nursing."  They laughed and instantly got along very well.

It's unusual for Sungmin to be very friendly on the first meeting but there was just something about this guy.  Something just seem to click and fit into the right place.

"Congratulations, Sungmin! I guess I'll see you on Monday then?"

"Yeah.  Bye!"  Sungmin waved a hand to his new friend before turning his attention back to Ryeowook.

"So you accepted the job."  Ryeowook stated the obvious.  "I have a HUGE feeling that it's because of him and not me."  And when Sungmin didn't deny, Ryeowook proceeded to tease him.  "You've got a crush on him, don't you?!?!"

"What? No! He's just a new friend."  Sungmin blushed.

"Oh come on~ I'm your bestfriend.  Just admit it!"

Monday was going to be exciting with their first day at work but Sungmin is more excited at meeting up with his new friend again, Kangin.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Monday came and Sungmin was disappointed because Kangin didn't sit right next to him.  Kangin went to sit right next to a girl named Yoojin.  When lunch came around, Kangin spent it with the girls.  He and Kangin were only able to exchange a few words today.  Then their words of exchange became shorter each day until they were no longer on speaking terms by Thursday and Friday.

Second Monday came and their trainer, Kim Heechul, announced that there will be a change with the seating arrangement.  "Because I want all of you to be friends with each other."  And that's how Kangin and Sungmin ended up sitting right next to each other.

Then their fellow trainees noticed how Sungmin would turn to the left to talk with Kibum and how Kangin would turn his chair to the back so he could talk with the girls sitting behind them and how Kangin and Sungmin aren't on speaking terms.

"Why are you two so awkward? I give you permission to disturb the training anytime if that means you guys get to talk with each other.  This rule only applies to Sungmin and Kangin so Shindong, stop talking to Gyuri and pay attention to the lesson!!!"

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

It apparently became obvious how Kangin has a wide knowledge of medical terms among the rest of them.  He was especially very familiar with operative procedures and instruments.

It felt like de ja vu when one morning, Sungmin arrived too early and Kangin was the second to arrive.  They sat right beside each other on the waiting lounge since the training room is still occupied by the night shift.

"I really don't think that you're in a nursing course."  Sungmin spoke up.

Kangin had an amused look on his face exactly like the first day they met.  "Then what do you think my course is?"

"Medicine."  Sungmin knew he said the right thing because of the surprised look on Kangin's face.  "The others think that you're intelligent but I know for a fact how intelligent Kibum can be because we went to the same school.  He probably memorized everything inside our medical-surgical nursing textbook and yet, the medical terms that we encounter in our reports here are things that we haven't learned at class or experienced as a nursing student at all."

Kangin placed a finger on Sungmin's lips to silence him.  "I didn't even put it in my resume so don't go around telling others."

Sungmin blinked and nodded, not even aware how cute he looked.  Kangin immediately pulled away his finger and sat farther away from Sungmin.  He noticed the confused and disappointed look on Sungmin's face but he tried to forget about it as he focused his attention to Kibum, who just arrived.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

When they became probees, Kangin and Sungmin were assigned in the night shift.  The rest of their co-trainees were assigned in the morning.

Sungmin instantly went to find his trainer the moment he knew about the knew schedule.  "Heechul, you did this on purpose!!! Put us in the morning shift!!"

"I'm not the one who makes the schedule but you can try to convince others to swap schedule with you."  Heechul suggested but he knows nobody else would want to swap schedule with considering it'll just be 2 at night and the rest of the 18 in the morning.

So Kangin and Sungmin had no choice but to be stuck together.  They sat right next to each other and tried to help with each other's reports but when it gets too difficult, they turn to the old or new regular MTs for help.

It's always around 3 am when Sungmin gets very sleepy.  Kangin would know this because Sungmin's hand would stop typing, his head would drop forward slightly and his eyes half close.  "Get some rest.  I'll wake you up after 30 minutes."  Kangin would say.

And immediately, Sungmin would drop his head on the table beside his keyboard.  If the TAT of the report still has a lot of hours left, then the report would just be left unfinished until Sungmin wakes up but if the TAT is near the limit, Kangin would type the report in Sungmin's place.  He knew Sungmin's different passwords anyway for the computer account, the platform account and internet access.

"Thank you so much and I'm sorry you had to do my report again."  Sungmin would say after he woke up.

"It's no big deal.  Go wash your face so you'll completely wake up."  Kangin replied.

On the way home, Sungmin and Kangin would share a taxi since they are heading to the same direction anyway.  That's when Kangin falls asleep and Sungmin would wake him up when the taxi arrived in front of Kangin's house.  A week passed by with this routine.

The routine changed in the second week.  Whenever Sungmin becomes sleepy, Kangin would declare that they should have a break or if the TAT is almost over, he would suggest they hurry up and finish the report before taking a break.  During the break, they would get some coffee at the cafe right across their company building.

Kangin would always order hot coffee.  Sungmin would order cold coffee, usually frapuccino.  Sometimes he would order tea and some sweets like cakes and donuts.  It's not the caffeine that keeps Sungmin awake.  It's the sugar.  That's when Sungmin becomes talkative and Kangin would talk back because he also has his own share of funny stories.  Their laughter would be the only loud noise in the cafe.  A few who were trying to study got annoyed but don't complain.

After work, they would still get a taxi together but Kangin would no longer feel sleepy.  They would end up talking again and when the taxi arrives in front of Kangin's house,  Kangin would invite Sungmin for breakfast.  "Tomorrow, let's have breakfast at your place."  Kangin said.

"Sure."  They alternate between Kangin or Sungmin's house to eat breakfast.

It was Friday when Sungmin felt tired that he fell asleep on Kangin's couch while waiting for breakfast.  Kangin didn't bother to wake him up but instead, took off his shoes and gave him a pillow and a blanket so that Sungmin would be more comfortable.

When Sungmin woke up, he panicked because it was already night.  "Oh my gosh!!! My mom..."

"I called your mother and told her that you fell asleep."  Kangin said, handing Sungmin his cellphone for evidence.

"Oh.  Thanks."  Then Sungmin's stomach made some noise.

"It only makes sense that you're hungry.  You didn't eat anything whole day because you just fell into a deep sleep.  You didn't even wake up after I kissed you."

"WHAT?!?!?!?!"

"Relax.  I was just kidding."  Kangin laughed.  "Adorable."  He pinched Sungmin's cheek lightly.  "Well, I'll go make us dinner.  I'll try to be quick."  With that, Kangin went to his kitchen.

But even though Kangin just said that he was kidding,  Sungmin couldn't get the thought of them kissing out his mind that easily.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

At the start of the 3rd week of them being probees, Kangin asked Sungmin about his sexual preference.

"Why ask all of a sudden?" Sungmin asked back.  He wished Kangin asked the question while they were working so Sungmin could just pretend that he didn't hear Kangin or tell Kangin that he needed to finish the report quickly.

"Because I'm curious."

"If it's only because you are curious, then I'm not answering.  Go find it out yourself."  Sungmin said before taking a sip from his coffee.

"Okay."  Kangin moved to sit right beside Sungmin.  He took Sungmin's coffee and placed it on the table before capturing Sungmin's lips with his own and tasting the sweetened latte coffee on Sungmin's tongue.  "You kissed back."  Kangin said after breaking their kiss.

"And you kissed me."  Sungmin said, still stunned from the kiss.

"Do you want to be kissed again?"

"What?!"

"I'll take that as a yes."  Kangin leaned in again for a much longer kiss.

So they added something new in their routine for the third week: K-I-S-S-I-N-G.  Kangin liked to do it in the cafe because their usual spot is at the dim part of the cafe and he liked the taste of coffee on Sungmin's lips and tongue.  Sungmin don't like kissing in the cafe but he can't resist Kangin anyway.  He'll just get embarassed after the kiss when he remembers that they're in a cafe.

Sungmin prefers to do it in the privacy of either of their house because it would just be the two of them and if the kiss gets more heated, they don't have to force themselves to stop.  They could just do it all the way though they haven't exactly gone all the way yet but the thing is, there's nobody to disturb them because Sungmin's parents would be out for work and Kangin's parents are usually working outside the country.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Sungmin noticed how Kangin would share about his nursing experience but never in medicine.  "I wasn't able to finish medicine and it only gave me bad memories which is why I don't want to talk about."  Kangin reasoned out.  "What about you? I remembered you said that you're going to take up medicine after you resign from this company."

"My grandmother's last words before she died made a great impact. She said I'll make a good nurse because I took good care of her but I thought that if I were a doctor instead, I might have been able to save her or lengthen her life."

"I can see that you must have really loved your grandma but you know, I think she's right.  You're going to be a good nurse."

Sungmin blinked, confused by what Kangin had just said.  "Huh?"

"Doctors care for the patient for only a few minutes each day but nurses care for the patient for hours each day and if you're an ICU nurse, you need to take care one patient for the entire shift.  And even before we started this relationship, I've already noticed how very caring you are so I think being a nurse is more suitable for you but hey, if you want to proceed medicine, I'll still love you and support you."  Kangin said, placing a kiss on Sungmin's cheek.

"Now you're making me more confuse about proceeding medicine or not."  Sungmin pouts.  "Are you really not going to tell me why you stopped medicine?"

"Five of my patients died.  It's not malpractice or negligence.  It can't really be considered my fault but just the fact that I cared for them and yet, they still died.  Well, it's very discouraging.  Two of them died while an operation was going on.  One of them died right after he got discharged because we all thought he was doing very well yet he had a sudden heart attack when he got home.  I just can't help but think that I'm cursed or something.  Like I'm one of the precipitating factors that leads to death."

It was like a huge burden was lifted from Kangin's heart.  He never told anyone about this.  His parents didn't mind about not continuing medicine since he already graduated from nursing anyway.  His friends thought it was because he failed a subject.  Sure, he failed but that was never the reason why he stopped medicine.

"And why did you want to take up medicine in the first place?"

"I didn't really have a good reason like you.  I just went along with my friends."

"Ah, I guess that's why you easily gave up."  Then Sungmin changed the topic but even though they were talking about another different topic, Kangin's mind couldn't forget what Sungmin had just said about how he just easily gave up medicine.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

It happened during one of their dates when an old woman suddenly fell.  Her family panicked, not knowing what to do.  Kangin immediately rushed to the scene and did a quick assessment.  "Does she have diabetes?"

"Yes but she always take her maintenance medications."  A person related to the old woman replied.

"I think she's currently having a hypoglycemic episode right now.  Someone buy orange juice or a coke or even a condensed milk would do."  Kangin instructed and he could see the a man, probably still related to the old woman, immediately rushed to the nearest store selling a sweet drink.

Sungmin remembered that he actually brought chocolate in his bag so he offered it to the old woman.  "Eat this."

The old woman immediately at it and after around 5 minutes, her relative arrived with a can of coke, which the old woman drank on it.  After another 5 minutes, she was already feeling better.

"Thank you so much, doc!!!"  They eagerly thanked Kangin while thinking that he was a doctor.

"I'm not a doctor."  Kangin replied with a soft tone.

"Of course, you are.  As long as you've entered the medicine course, you're already called a doctor unless you're a nurse?  You should become a doctor anyway.  You'd be a great doctor!!!"  The old woman said enthusiastically as if she didn't have a hypoglycemic episode a few minutes ago.

"Um... thanks and you're welcome.  Well, we have to go now.  Take care."  Kangin said before walking away.

Sungmin could see that Kangin was in daze.  "Feels good huh?  To be able to save someone's life."

Kangin nodded.

"They said that you're going to be a great doctor and from what I just witnessed, I completely agree with them."  Sungmin stated, moving to stand in front of Kangin so Kangin had stopped walking and looked right straight to Sungmin's eyes.

Kangin placed his hands on Sungmin's shoulders.  "Let's enroll together!"

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

"Good luck with medicine!"  Kibum said on the last day of work for Kangin and Sungmin as MTs in the company.

"I'm going to miss you, Sungmin!! We haven't been apart since birth!!!"  Ryeowook hugged Sungmin knowing that he won't be able to hug Sungmin for a long time.

The moment Kangin and Sungmin stepped outside the company building.  They both looked back and stared at the building for a while.

"Time just flew so fast.  It felt like we just met a while ago."  Sungmin said.

"Yeah.  A lot of things happened.  I'm gonna miss this place and the people in it."  Then Kangin wrapped an arm around Sungmin's waist.  "I'm actually glad you decided to proceed with medicine.  It'll be much more endurable with you in school even though we'll be in different year levels and have different schedules."

"I'm glad too because that means I can borrow your notes and ask for your help and you can help me study too!!!"

"I think what you need is a tutor and not a boyfriend."  Kangin raised an eyebrow.

"Nope! What I need is an experienced boyfriend in medicine and in other areas."  Sungmin said slyly leaning his body on Kangin.

"In other areas such as?"  Kangin asked.

Sungmin looked at him innocently that it should be sinful considering the words that came out of his mouth.  "Hmm.. I don't know... Kissing? Sex?"

Kangin laughed and placed a quick kiss on Sungmin's lips.  "We can do those things later and for the rest of the days before school starts."

Sungmin's eyes seem to sparkle.  "Looking forward to that."

END OF CHAPTER 2

A/N:  Hmm... I think this chapter is more of a "career choice" than an actual romance fic so I'm sorry that there wasn't much kissing or smut here ;;>.>  It's just that life isn't just all about "love life" ya know?  In fact, I survived without having a love life since birth and I'm like 21 now~ I'm gonna be an old maid ;;>.>

Also, I've already graduated from a nursing course but I'm not sure if I really want to work as a nurse so I'm exploring other options and now, I'm currently working as a medical transcriptionist.  At some point, I even considered taking up medicine but then, I don't want to study again XD;;;

For the hypoglycemic episode, that really did happen while I was in the mall with my mom and uncle.  My uncle is a doctor so he was able to help the old woman.  Her daughter was like "Mom! Don't die yet!!!" In a really panicked voice.  It looked kinda scary at that time but afterwards, it just seem laughable ^^;; All is well and good!!!
