and I couldn't help but have the niggly feeling that Martha overhearing it over the COM was done for more than angst reasons...

I don't know any spoilers at all, nor do I want to, but I totally thought this too. It seems like they're focusing on it a bit too much for it to be incidental. Building up for Martha to save the day in some fantastic way, perhaps?

I'm trying to avoid the big spoilers too, but there was something about the way they filmed that scene that had me wondering, especially considering all the little details used in this episode (the watch, the Face of Boe and the silver desolation, etc) Basically, I don't think it was a throwaway angst scene :-)
