I'd make some threatening sound about defriending you over that, but I'm not sure we've known each other long enough for me to joke like that. I'm not just a fan, I'm one of those fans. The baseball cap I'm wearing in this icon... *points to icon* ...has my Hysterical Woman number on the back of it.
But as William he was great...
As someone who's come to be a BIG fan of Gareth's in general, I'm glad you enjoyed him in W13.

Absolutely. If you can put up with my not much caring for Three the least I can do is put with your not much caring for Ianto. ;)
Nevertheless, I stick by my opinion that Ianto was dull...
You're entitled to it. It just surprises me when I hear someone say something like that about Ianto because he is a lot of things to me, but never dull. Course, if you liked Gareth as Wooly then I can at least hope you'll see Ianto's "flatness" as a problem with the writing and-or direction rather than with Gareth.
...and if you feel that's reason enough to defriend me it's your choice.
Oooh, you won't get rid of me that easily. :D

Pfft! Given how vocal a critic I am and always have been of Rusty, of course I blame the writing not the actor. There's only so much an actor can do with poor writing.
I don't believe I was trying to get rid of you - just giving you the option.

Heh, RTD and his endless quest to take credit for everything, even when he can't be bothered to get a clue about it, has said Ianto was "designed to be a cult hero." Of course, he might have mentioned something about it having been "accidental" design while he was doing it. *Whistles.*

While Rusty has never said that Ianto's popularity is all Gareth's doing in those exact words, he did say in one interview I saw, when he was trying to get people to shut up about Ianto, that people's love of Ianto was, "a love of the actor and his performance." I've never forgotten that since it is a backhanded admittance it is not the writing, directing, or producing. I love Gareth, and I want all the best for him. I care less about which role of his is someones favorite than I do that everyone sees him shine.
I don't ( ... )

I think he's made it pretty clear that with both Donna and Ianto he was not only surprised by their popularity, but he can't get his brain around how they can be as popular as they are. He expects certain kinds of characters to be popular--the angst ridden hero like he made the Doctor, and continues to make Jack, the "pretty" and strong girl like Rose, Martha, or Gwen. He doesn't get Donna's popularity because she isn't his idea of "pretty," or a girl for that matter, and he doesn't get Ianto because he never saw him as the hero.

Really? I thought I was clearly talking about Rusty not *understanding* when I said he doesn't get how Ianto is popular. I didn't simply say Rusty doesn't know or care that Ianto is popular. I said he doesn't know or care "how it is that there are a lot of Ianto Jones fans." I'm sorry I wasn't clear. Rusty knows Ianto is popular. He wouldn't bother to try and claim credit for Ianto's popularity if he wasn't aware of it in the first place. What he doesn't understand is how/why Ianto is popular. He doesn't understand, and because he likes to think he's above the fans he's never going to. He'd have to actually listen to understand. Given that John has made some effort to understand and still doesn't seem to get it, listening might not help Rusty.

Still, you know what George Bernard Shaw said about Britain and America (two nations divided by a common language).
