Writing Workshops!

Over the weekend, I attended an interesting writing workshop with Juliet McKenna and Dr George Green at P-Con which was very different in nature to the workshop I attended at Octocon last year, with R.F.Long.

The P-Con workshop concentrated on the craft of writing. How not to crowd your writing with various and ultimately meaningless cliched descriptions, and how to draw your readership into the story. They also discussed the differences between writing a novel and a short story, with Juliet supplying some of her own work as an example, and we also touched on the virtues of a twist at the end of a story.

In contrast, the workshop I attended at Octocon focused more on character and plot, specifically with regards to the novel. Thinking about it, I think the two workshops complemented each other rather well, as they dealt with two sides of the coin!
