Knight Moves
Ian stands to attention as his reborn father tells him what he must do.
Sarah hasn't noticed yet. Maybe the blade hasn't warned her, or maybe it has and she just chooses to ignore it. Gabriel was her friend, after all, the one she could count on; her messenger, her knight in shining armour. Everything Ian couldn't be.
Gone now.
Well...nearly.
Sometimes, Ian could still see flashes of Gabriel, especially during these dark, secret meetings before first light, when his father's hold loosens ever so slightly. But Gabriel grows weaker with very passing day, and while his soul is still tethered to his body, his will to be free, to fight back, leaches from him.
The center cannot hold, without hope.
“Ian, are you listening?” his father asks, his dark light shining in Gabriel's luminous eyes. “Do you know what you must do?”
“Yes, father,” Ian said, automatically, as he got to his feet and headed for the door.
“Ian.” And the timbre of his voice changes as dawn hovers below the horizon. “Do you know what you need to do?”
Ian paused and looked over his shoulder, at the slight figure, his eyes shadowed. He glances at the hand that clutches the arm rest. The scarred double circles seem to fade for an instance, and Ian decides.
He nods silently.
