Soooooooookie!

The one terrible thing about ebooks and audiobooks is that they're too damned easy to buy! At least with paper books, you have to either A) order them online and then wait a while for them to arrive, thus reducing the chances of going on a wild spending spree, or B) put on your coat and go into town to buy them in a bookshop, where the prospect of having your arms pulled out of your sockets by the weight puts you off doing something too impulsive. Both of these options reduce your risk of doing something stupid enough to warrant putting up another shelf.

What prompted this rant, you ask?

Well, for the last week or so, I've had this awful bug, that has left me fit for nothing except trailing my duvet around the house and drinking copious amounts of tea. Concentrating on a book (the new Kelley Armstrong, Frostbitten ) seemed too much for my poor fuzzy brain, so I though I'd download an audio, and do the passive thing...

And so I downloaded the first of the Sookie Stackhouse audiobooks, read by Johanna Parker.

Uh, nine audiobooks later....

I think the biggest difference lies in the portrayal of Sookie. In the books, Sookie is a lot more aware of her failings, as well as a lot more independant. She still has the tendency to fly off the handle, but she isn't stupid and her lack of education is due to the fact she couldn't stand a classroom situation, and all those minds, rather than a lack of smarts. The big vacuous smile she is so fond of using in the series is shown to be a form of camouflage in the books. in short, I prefer the book version of the character.

Bill has the spine of an squid in the books, and by the end of book three, Sookie has already thrown him to the kerb. Eric is still a bastard, but honest about it, and he and Sookie become an item during the books. I found their relationship very amusing, and rather refreshing after the schmoop!fest of the Bill/Sookie relationship in the TV series.

Book Jason is a self centered prat, but not as dumb as the TV version. I prefer TV Jason.

Tara is only Tara in name only, she's a totally different character in the books, and I prefer the TV version, too.

Sam is still Sam, though, and still very sweet.

And OMG book!Pam is awesome! So is TV Pam, but she doesn't get enough face time.

Verdict: I love the TV series, but the books make the main characters a lot more appealing, especially Sookie.
