Dear Philadelphia,
Please do not riot. I know that it is in our nature to behave like rabies infected wild animals when we get together in a large group, but please try and restrain yourselves. I know this is a huge event, and I know that this is a chance, like no other, for violent mayhem and destruction, but, again, I beg you not to riot.
I ask this large favor one simple reason- my mother. My mother is getting old and my mother is Jewish. If there were to be a riot, or more kilings and maimings than usual, she would come into the city and physically move me, and everything I own, home. This would cause quite a strain on her, seeming as how her back might go out or I might have to kill her within two weeks of living with her and her guilt trips.
I know it is a selfish reason. Sure I could have pleaded that you not riot for the sake of the children in Africa, or for the image of the city as a place of brotherly love, or even for your own safety. But I know you Philadelphia, and you don't care about Africa, how the rest of the country or world sees us, or even about the lives of you and yours. But please, PLEASE PHILADELPHIA DO NOT RIOT TODAY! for my mother, for my sanity, please.
Thank you,
Alexis Brecher
P.S. If you decide you must destroy everything, please keept it to the west of Broad Street and away from my apartment. That is the best compromise that I can offer.
