Rumors and Disappointments

First of all, saw and loved Prince Caspian. It made me happy. They did a lot of interpretation from the book to flesh out the story and added quite a bit of snark on the part of minor characters but I thought it was to the betterment of the film. Of course, since it's been years since I read that one, my memory could be fucked up. Eh. *shrugs*

William Moseley was awesome as Peter. ♥

Okay, was browsing some Torchwood season 3 rumors and found this site with a bunch of them. My feelings, they are (for the most part) not happy. Hoping the majority of those rumors prove untrue, both from the standpoint of a fan and from a "that's just a generally stupid thing to do" standpoint.

First off on Torchwood things are going to change massively. Leaving the show are Burn Gorman [Owen Harper], Naoko Mori [Toshiko] and John Barrowman [Captain Jack Harkness], though it is likely that Barrowman will return now and then as Captain Jack in a recurring capacity.

Forget the whole Jack/Ianto thing, isn't Jack sort of the main character of the show? I wouldn't mind a couple of Jack-less episodes to showcase the rest of the team but you'll have a lot of work to do to convince me that it's still Torchwood without Jack in the primary role.

Plus it goes against his character, who made a big deal of proclaiming that he came back "for you - for all of you" and who stressed the importance of still having Gwen and Ianto with him at the end of the season finale.

Joining the team as a full time member as of season 3 will be Freema Agyeman who will step in as Martha Jones and take over the day to day running of Torchwood from Captain Jack. Remaining with the show will be Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper.

Ignoring Gwen remaining for now. Yay Martha! And I could see Martha taking over for Jack... temporarily. But again, is it still TW without Jack? And wouldn't it make a hell of a lot more sense for Dr. Jones to fill the medical role, not the leadership role?!

Another big change for Torchwood is the format of the show. Up until now the series has been aimed at a more grown up audience, and has been sold as a Science Fiction series for adults. This has allowed it plenty of latitude with regards to sexual innuendos and humour. Some of the humour may stay, but it will be dumbed down somewhat so as not to alienate the younger audience members.

This is by far my BIGGEST issue. When Torchwood came out, it was marketed as a "grown-up" Dr. Who - darker, more sexual, more violence and dirty language. It's one of the basic foundations of the show, much as Jack is. Take that away, and you're making it an entirely new show and just attempting to call it by the same name.

And the phrase "dumbing down" automatically turns me off to anything. Piss off fuckers.

Oh, and on a minor note, John Barrowman claimed fans would like the plans for the new season. As far as my knowledge goes, they wouldn't be too thrilled with ANY of those rumored changes.

Now onto the Dr. Who rumors.

While on the subject of Doctor Who there is a good reason why Catherine Tate is leaving after the one season. Much like Martha it was planned from the start.

She is?! First time I heard that, but then again, I don't really surf the fandom. And isn't this Doctor plowing through companions rather fast?

Though the big difference is Donna whom Tate plays in the series will turn out to be a pretty nasty piece of work. Which is why we have a series 4 finale that will include the return of Captain Jack, Sarah Jane Smith, Martha Jones and Rose Tyler.

Oooh, hate this. Not the finale stuff but the Donna being a nasty piece of work stuff. Guess that means the character is a HELL of a lot better of an actor than we've so far been given indication. While I don't object to the idea of a companion going bad, I object to the idea of DONNA turning evil. Or nasty. Whatever. She's been utterly lovely in that she's snarky and caring and so, so human. I've appreciated the development of her character and to turn her evil would undo all of that. How the hell would such a thing work with her sensitivity to the plight of the Ood, her begging the Doctor to save that family from Pompeii? It just doesn't work in my opinion. It's not in her character as it's been presented to us so far.

In addition to this my source has informed me that David Tennant will be leaving the series and will regenerate during the last few minutes of the 2009 Christmas Special... Tipped to take over from Tennant is Full Monty Actor Robert Carlyle though. One insider at the BBC claims that negotiations are currently underway with the actor.

Okay, I like Robert Carlyle well enough but... People ARE aware that Time Lords are limited to thirteen regenerations, right? He's on ten now and getting hell a close to the end of his line at a pretty damn rapid rate right now.

Besides that, Tennant himself leaving seems pretty bizarre to me. That man loves Dr. Who. Playing the Doctor has been a dream of his, he's been interviewed about loving it, and many people have been expected him to stay for as long as he can. So, is it a matter of be careful what you wish for because you might get it, or just moronic, asshole producers? Or is it just false rumor? I'm hoping for the last. I quite like Ten, and I would prefer to stretch that time between regenerations out a bit longer.

Edit: "In an interview on Jonathan Ross' BBC Radio 2 show, Catherine Tate said that Tennant may be leaving after the next series.[10] However this has since been denied by Tennant in an interview he gave to Ripley Today.[11] He had also mentioned to the TV-Guide What's On TV, that he is going to keep the public guessing as to when he resigns from Doctor Who."

No clue how many of the above rumors are true. Hell, I wouldn't mind if they all prove false and both shows go in different directions. Will I stop watching if they happen? Mm... Might consider it at least, though I would probably tune in (unhappily) for the first episode or two to give the benefit of the doubt. Still, I think the producers would have to be on crack to make the majority of those decisions. Not like that's ever stopped anyone before though - just look at Marvel!
