Okay, so I finally got to see The Parting of the Ways and also The Last of the Time Lords. And here's the thing: I like Rose Tyler, but honestly, she's rather a Mary Sue, isn't she?
Pretty, smart, young, funny, super-nice to everyone, and of course everyone falls for her - even evil aliens and the Doctor himself, and then there's that whole gains god-like powers just in time to save the universe thing.
Then we have Martha Jones. Martha is the anti-Mary Sue. Smart and pretty still but a bit older, and more mature. And she's so wonderfully, imperfectly human. The fate of the world depending on her. No super-powers. No fantastic weapons. People aren't falling over their feet to be by her side (except maybe Shakespeare which just goes to show you that he really IS a genius). She's just Martha Jones - a med student with a key and her own spirit and in love with a man who barely notices her. And that, right there, makes her fantastic and amazing and I think I may be a little in love with her.
Edit: I will say though, I love Rose's smile. When they travel, she smiles and just comes alive. She really seems to shine then, and it's the best part of her. As much as I love Martha, I prefer Rose/the Doctor as a romantic pairing I think.
