Willow,

Hey. Hope everything is okay over there in Colorado…you know, with your husband.

You got married.

To a guy.

I still think that’s weird. I mean, okay - so definitely not weird if Buffy had done it. But she likes guys. You don’t. Well, obviously you did at one point because there was Oz. And didn’t you and Xander have an almost-thing?

Anyway - I miss you. A lot. It’s just not the same with you being gone. Buffy looks like she misses her best friend half the time. Which, yeah, I guess that was you and you are gone and so, she missed you, too.

And Xander… I’ll get to him in a second.

Next up - research. Guess who’s the new official research girl? If you guessed me, then you’re right. I’m Willow version Two, except minus the red hair, the magic, and the girl-liking. You get my point, right? I’m not totally at your speed, yet. But I’ll get there. I hope. Someone has to do it…you know, since you’re not here.

Buffy’s looking over my shoulder. She says that making you feel guilty won’t make you come home.

Ow!

She smacked me in the back of the head. Oh well, at least now she’s wandering off to go patrol. I guess watching me type isn’t that interesting, after all.

Okay, so back to Xander.

He is determined that you married Jack because of a curse or a wish or something. He spends most of his free time with the books now. And, no, can’t call him Research Boy - because he’s not interested in researching anything useful. Just his theory. It’s all ‘Wills was tricked this’ and ‘I’ll get to the bottom of this curse’ that. I swear, obsession, thy name is Xander.

So when we come to visit you guys for that get together thing at your hubby’s house, do us all a favor and try to talk some sense into him? It’s getting old. He used to be fun and now he’s just… well, not fun. Boring, even.

Speaking of the barbecue… is this a good idea? I mean, you know us and our track record for get togethers. There’s a high probability that this will end in demon attack, vamp attack, a combination of the two, or maybe just a near-apocalypse. Then again, that could only make it more fun.

I miss you. A lot. A lot. A lot.

Love, Dawn

Wills,

Just answer yes or no to the following questions. I’m doing a little project.

Have you experienced (recently):

Rash
Boils
Unexplained other medical illness
Hearing noises
Unreasonably bad luck
Seeing a dark shadow following you from place to place?

See you at the…thing.

Xan

Willow,

I really must insist that you speak with Xander upon our arrival in Colorado Springs. He is driving everyone quite thoroughly insane with his insistence that you have fallen under some sort of spell or curse. While I will admit that the nature of the inception of your marriage to Colonel O’Neill was less than ideal, it is hardly cause for the lengths that he is going to.

He spent three hours’ straight looking through the books last night. Not even Dawn’s offer of Twinkies could dissuade him.

I am sure that you see the seriousness of the situation and I trust you will do the right thing.

How are things there? And the contract work? While you have offered assurance that these are the so-called ‘good guys’, I must admit to feeling a little trepidation that you are doing any sort of work for the U.S. military.

I look forward to speaking in greater detail with you upon our arrival.

Giles

I shut my laptop and sighed

Oh, this was going to be fun.

And where the hell did Xander get off? I mean - yeah, this is weird - but that doesn’t make it a curse or something else evil. I’m sure that Buffy could use his help with other stuff. I mean, she doesn’t have me there with her anymore.

Which shouldn’t make a difference. I need to tell her that. First thing when she gets here, even. Me being here and her being in Sunnydale does not mean that I can’t do what I used to do. I can still be Research Girl - in a limited capacity, of course, since I don’t have access to all of Giles’ books.

Knew I should have finished scanning those into the database!

“What’s wrong?” Jack asked. I hadn’t even heard him come in the house. It made me jump a little.

Okay, a lot.

“Don’t… sneak up on me,” I growled, when I could speak again around the pounding in my heart.

“Sorry.” He wasn’t. Not at all. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about my… um… Jack, over these past weeks, its that he likes to be sneaky. Daniel warned me. So did Sam. I think Teal’c might have offered up a warning of his own, but its so hard to tell with that guy!

I mean, alien. Definitely an alien.

“So - what’s wrong?”

I shrugged. “Nothing. But why’re you home. I thought you were off-world until late tonight.”

This time he was the one shrugging. “Danny sprained his ankle. We’ve been back since this morning. Had to debrief first.”

That’s Daniel for you. Or, so I’ve been told. He takes clumsy to an extreme. Still, I held back a snicker. Wasn’t nice to laugh at the misfortune of your husband’s best friend; even when said best friend did deserve a little poking fun at.

“There’s leftover Chinese in the fridge.”

He nodded, but didn’t move. I sighed. “What?”

“What’s. Wrong?”

In a battle of wills, I can hold my own.

Jack can do better. Much better.

“Just Xander being silly,” I waved it off. “Nothing I can’t handle. Don’t be surprised if he tries to haul you off for questioning when they get here tomorrow night, though.”

Those questions would be great, I’m sure. Don’t know how well Jack’ll take it when Xander starts asking if he’s had any mysterious rashes or boils show up.

Then again, it might be funny.

Really funny.

I stood up and stretched, glancing at the clock. Only about three in the afternoon and I already felt like just crawling in bed and ignoring the world. I was seriously going to have to have a talk with my bestest bud tomorrow. This whole thing was just silly. I made a mistake. People do that. Its not the first mistake I’ve made, even if I hope that its sort of the last one of this magnitude. I mean, waking up married? Not something to make into a hobby, if you get my meaning.

My back twinged and I winced.

“Back?”

“Yeah,” I said. “I was moving the picnic table around in the backyard earlier -“

“For Christ’s sake, Willow! It could have waited until I got home,” he groaned, but he didn’t seem mad at me; more like just irritated that once again I tried to be so independent. He hated that. If we’re going to be married then we can rely on each other for some things.

Well, that’s what he said anyway. Silly me, still not used to having a husband to help me with things like that.

“C’mere.” He held a hand out for me. I looked at the hand, then his face, then his hand. What was this?

Taking his hand, I let him turn me around. Ok, so this put my butt right in his face. Either he didn’t notice or… well, not thinking about that… but I am thinking about that and I’m getting red in the face and -

Okay, that’s nice. His thumbs worked at the stress in my lower back, slowing rubbing away the tension. I could almost feel the pain melting away.

“Oh, that’s good,” I murmured, relaxing.

“Thanks. I used to do this for…” he trailed off, but I got it. He used to do it for his ex-wife. The one that had left him after Charlie died. Wench. That’s so the time to abandon someone you care about, after all - right after such a horrible thing. I mean, seriously, evil much?

I realized two things a moment later.

One - Jack hadn’t stopped massaging my back when he made his little verbal faux pas.

Two - I enjoyed him touching me like this.

A lot.

A lot, a lot.

Goddess, what kind of lesbian am I? Getting all … you know… over Jack touching me? My back of all places, too!

Yep, that’s it. I’ve got to turn in my official lesbian membership card.

Wonder if they have a different one for girls like me that couldn’t make up their minds?

His hands slid down, fingertips brushing somewhere they shouldn’t. That thing that was right in front of his face even. Oh, it was perfectly innocent, because his thumbs were working on the lowest portion of my back now; still I knew I should step away and put distance between us.

I really should.

Really.

And, I’m gonna do that.

Just… not right now.

Another brush of fingertips and I’m sure, just sure, that maybe this is what I must have sort of been feeling that night when he and I… I mean…

Glad he can’t see my face, because its red. I can’t even think about what we did that night without burning up. Not that there’s much I remember but, well, it was obvious we’d done something. You know…really obvious. Ache-y kind of obvious.

And now I’m ache-y, but in a totally different way.

I think I made a noise or something, because Jack’s hands fumbled a bit in the next moment; losing that sureness and strength that had been there.

But he didn’t move them from where they were, the almost-innocent touching still was happening.

I swallowed. Okay. If he wasn’t going to be strong enough to stop this, I was.

Maybe.

No, yes.

I stepped away, turning to give him my brightest smile. “Thanks, I feel a lot better now.”

“No problem,” he said. It wasn’t my imagination that his voice was a little…you know…husky-ish, but I ignored it. And if there was a reason why he stayed leaning forward like that, putting his elbows on his knees, instead of sitting back like he had been… I ignored that, too.

Because I was definitely not ready for anything like this.

Not again, not yet.

But…maybe, just maybe, we could try sharing the bed tonight.

Maybe.
