Chapter One      ||      Chapter Two

CHAPTER THREE

The weekends passed by in a blur and before he knew it, it was Monday after school. Kim Key skipped a bit and came to a halt once he reached the store that was Jinki’s second home. Actually, come to think of it, didn’t Jinki live above the store? So it was technically his first home, too…or his main home. Or would that be with his parents who had a house a few miles away?

While he contemplated this fact, the door to the store opened and someone said, “Kibum…”

Key took a deep breath and flashed a smile in the older boy’s direction. Without waiting to be asked, he breezed by Jinki and through the open door, “were you waiting for me?”

“Uh…well, we said after school, right?”

“Right,” Key continued his beaming ray of smiles. He had never smiled so damn much in his life and his cheeks were hurting. But Kim Jonghyun told him that when he didn’t smile, he had a bored look on his face. And bored did not attract anyone - Jinki, in this case. So he would smile even if it killed him.

“Would you like to study here or upstairs?” Jinki looked around the store, “it’s slow for now and Joon is looking after it for me. So…we don’t have hang around here”

Upstairs!? Calm down, Kim Key. Calm. Sometimes he couldn’t really control his raging hormones as well as he liked and sometimes images came into his mind before he could stop them. So he stood foolishly in the middle of the store, the store where his mother and grandma shopped, and tried to control his rampaging imagination whilst Jinki panicked and Joon studied him discreetly from the cash register.

“Are you…hot?” Jinki asked, “you’re turning red.”

“I-I’m fine.” Was he stuttering? Key snapped his eyebrows together in annoyance. Gosh! What was happening to him?

“I’ll lower the A.C, you go on up.”

Key nodded and followed in the direction Jinki pointed. Right at the top of the stairs was a door that was left wide opened. He stepped into a cozy living room, with a small kitchen on the right. The room itself was nothing special: a couch and a small T.V., there was a desk pushed into a far corner, papers and books stacked on top of each other.

The room wasn’t dirty, but it was definitely messy. There were a few things here and there that Key would have never tolerated in his own room. Things needed to be in their places, but surprisingly, it only added a homey feel to this place.

The room smelled like Jinki, he realized, startled that he was so tuned into the other’s scent. Great, now he was a freak. First he wanted to lick Jinki and now he knew what the older nerd smelt like…he was turning into a cat. And speaking of cat…

Key shrieked as a feline jumped onto the counter and studied him curiously.

“Wh…where did you come from?” Key moved his book bag to the front as a shield. He hated animals - well not so much hated as he simply didn’t know what to do with them. “Do you live here, too? I’m sorry…should I leave?”

`”You just got here,” a voice behind him said gently, and Key shrieked again. He spun around and clutched his heart to his chest.

“God! You people need to stop that.”

“People?” Jinki raised an eyebrow quizzically.

“You and your…cat,” Key gestured towards the counter where the kitten still sat.

Jinki chuckled and came closer into the room, shutting the door behind him. The kitten immediately jumped off the counter and came to snuggle itself into Jinki’s legs. Laughing, the boy picked up the mewing creature and pressed it against him, his face broke into a smile that nearly stopped Key’s thudding heart. For a moment, he wondered what he was doing here, encroaching into such a serene atmosphere.

“Should we get started?” Jinki broke the silence first. His face still had that easy going smile plastered. The one that showed too much of his teeth that were too white, his whole face was shining from their gleam. “What did you want me to tutor you in?”

Key sighed and dug out his books, “how do you feel about Physics?”

“My favorite subject.”

“Are you serious?”

Jinki chuckled, “no. But, as your tutor, I have to say that.”

"So tell me," Key asked, and closed the gap between them. "Are you always this nice or only to certain few?" He half expected the older boy to go into some sputtering speech, or maybe a deep crimson blush to go with those commercially white teeth.

But Jinki simple laughed, “Depend on who you ask. According to my sister, I’m the demon child with a soft side. My parents, however, sees nothing wrong with me.”

Key gawked. Did he get the right person? The one standing before him was easy-going and totally relaxed. There was no nervousness coiled up, no clumsiness as Jinki made his way to the couch and sat down without much flourish. The older boy had his Physics book and was flipping through it, muttering as he went. Key was forced to remember how easily he had charmed the old lady and resigned, maybe he didn’t know what he was getting into.

The tutoring went well, Key thought, even if he wanted to smack his tutor with his Physics book a few times. Why did smart people have such complicated ways of explaining things? By the end of the night, Key felt like his brain somewhat expanded and his crush lessened a bit towards the one who was grinning at him.

“Come on, Kibum. It’s just a few problems.”

“Homework is homework,” Key mumbled but he stuffed the stupid paper inside his book and sighed. “You smart people and homework. The rest of the world likes spending time doing other things, you know.”

Jinki shrugged, “I do, too. But there is no way to understand Physics unless you practice the problems.”

“Hm,” Key pouted, “yeah, okay.”

OH! It suddenly hit him like bricks that he forgot his whole intention. Key looked around the room for something to comment on, something provoking, maybe crossing the line a bit - naughty fun. Attractive. But all he could focus on was the pile of dishes that was stacked on Jinki’s sink.

He frowned, “are you collecting molds? Why didn’t you wash those dishes?”

Now he sounded like his mom, Key mentally slapped himself. Yes, he was attractive all right.

Jinki laughed, his eyes crinkled, “yeah, okay.” He imitated Key’s tone from earlier and earned a glare from the younger boy. Standing up, Jinki stretched his arms and twisted his torso. They had been sitting for such a long time, his whole body felt stiff. He stopped when he noticed Key’s eyes on him and studied the blush that was forming across the younger’s cheeks.

Key’s mouth went dry at the sight of the taunted muscles before him when the blasted T-shirt decided to ride up a bit as Jinki stretched. His face was completely heated but there was his chance. With a gulp, Key tried for a sassy smile, “you’ve been working out?”

“Are you hitting on me?” Jinki asked bluntly, setting the other boy back.

“What?”

“I thought so,” with a smirk, he strode into the kitchen. “That was weak. I’ll get you something cold from the fridge.”

Mouth agape, Key stared after the retreating back. WHAT THE FREAK!? He was expecting a blushing fool who stuttered over his obviously compliment, but Jinki…laughed at him!!?

“Y…yo…you -“

Jinki turned then, eyes cold like the drinks in his hands. “What? The clueless nerd just trumped you at your own game? You don’t think I could see through you?”

“B…how?”

“Thanks for playing, Kibum. But I think you should just leave now.” Jinki tried to hold back his temper but he couldn’t help it. Something just really riled him. Though he guessed it was his fault since he knew he was the butt of a joke, and he agreed to this day anyways. He even forgot about it when they were working side by side; but it was time to face reality. “I’m not sure what’s going on - maybe you were dared or something. But I’m not an idiot, Kibum. We can stop pretending like you even tolerate me when you haven’t for the last twelve years we’ve known each other.”

He felt the guilt the nanosecond the words left his mouth. In truth, Jinki really was too nice for his own good. If he hadn’t been so angry, he would have endured it all and laughed about it later. But there was nothing funny to him right now. Why in the world was he so angry? It might have just been a harmless joke. He tried to stop the erratic beating of his heart but it just picked its pace when he turned and saw Kibum studying him, fire beamed from the younger’s eyes.

“You are an idiot.” Key came closer, step by step, his body moved in its own. He heard Jinki’s breath hitched when they were an inch away. A smirk came on his face when his brain caught up to his body’s intentions. Without thinking, he pressed his lips to the other and was rewarded with sparks along his skin. Full luscious lips were now pressed against his own: warm and uncertain. Key gave himself a moment before pulling away; a confident grin concealed his own nervousness. “I wasn’t dared. And it wasn’t a joke.”

Jinki blinked. His system was on full alert the moment Kibum’s lips pressed firmly against his own. He couldn’t remember the last time he was excited about a close mouthed kiss - well, he was never excited over a closed mouth kiss. He was suddenly aware of the cool tiles against his feet, the way Kibum’s hair was teasing his face, the air that was coming out from the still opened fridge. His better judgment left him, so he could only ask, “it wasn’t a joke?”

“No. And I wasn’t how I imagined my first kiss to be…but I think it proved my point.”

“YOUR FIRST!? I TOOK YOUR FIRST KISS!” Jinki went into full hysterics, and Key wasn’t sure if he should be amused or offended. “Oh gawd! Are you even legal? No wait…you aren’t! Are you?”

“I’m turning eighteen soon. And calm down, you didn’t ravage some virgin. I kissed you, jeez.”

“T-tu..turning…oh man. Oh man. Your first kiss…”

Ah, there was the old Lee Jinki.

So Key left him to mumble to himself and slipped out of the apartment. That wasn’t how he imagined his first kiss to be, true; but that was definitely not the reaction he expected, either.

Key ran home. The wind slapped at his face, stung his eyes. He did that all just to be taken as a joke? And in the wrong way, no less, Key huffed. He stopped just outside of his apartment building and cursed into the darkness. The empty street responded with its silence since it was late now and everyone was probably in their home. He hadn’t realized he had stayed at Jinki’s so long.

Was this the second rejection?

He should have seen it coming. Ever since their meeting, Key had tried every way possible to brush Jinki off like an annoyance. And now he was making a complete change and went on full status as a creeper. He even made some lame comment regarding Jinki’s physique, Key smacked himself. That was so effing lame now he thought about it.

It was because he listened to Jonghyun and all those movies. Subtlety!? HA! He could have thrown himself on the clueless, retarded nerd and Jinki couldn’t have been more shocked. So yeah, Key saw his point in thinking this was some kind of weird twisted joke.

Rationality didn’t stop him from kicking the crap out of a box lying on the ground. Who was the idiot who left trash in front of his apartment? Did they not have any pride in beautifying the neighborhood!? He cursed again, this time more colorfully. Pulling out his phone, Key punched in the numbers he wanted and waited for exactly two rings.

Kim Jonghyun, you’re dead. You are so dead! Pick up the damn phone!

Pissed, he hung up and dialed another number. This time, the phone rung three times, and he praised himself for having more patience.

“Hello?” Came a muffled reply.

“Minho…you’re asleep?”

“It’s freaking midnight,” his friend told him crossly. “And we have school tomorrow.”

“So no?”

Minho sighed and he heard the ruffles of sheets which meant his friend was getting up, “where are you, Key?”

“In front of my apartment.”

“Give me a minute.”

“And he said all coolly, “I know this is a joke”. So I kissed him and the idiot just stood there and started babbling about how he stole my first kiss when I made the move on him! And it was just a freaking kiss. I really have bad tastes. Why do I have to like an idiot like that?”

“I’m sorry,” Minho interrupted, using his hands to stop Key’s flow of words. “You did what?”

“I tried to hit on Jinki…”

“You like Jinki hyung?”

“Yes,” Key huffed, frustrated. “Yes. Really, did NO ONE notice?”

“Well, Taemin might have said something, but I didn’t think…oh, well this clears up a lot of things. Okay, so you tried to confess?”

“No,” annoyed, Key narrowed his eyes, how did Taemin know and not Jonghyun nor Minho? And furthermore, was the alien not listening to him? “I never said I confessed. I tried to hit on him and…”

More annoyance crossed Key’s face when Minho busted out laughing, clutching his sides to support himself. He couldn’t see anything funny in the situation but apparently, Minho did. He laughed so hard Key wondered if he would pee in his pants.

“Key, why would you listen to Jjong?”

“What’d you mean?”

“I mean, why don’t you confess to Jinki hyung instead of…whatever that you are doing?”

“I…”

Because a confession came with rejection and after tonight, Key was sure that would be his result if he tried to confess.

“Just hang in there,” Minho patted his shoulders as if reading his mind. “I’m sure things will work out.”

As if by magic, his phone vibrated at that exact moment and Jinki’s name flashed across the screen. Minho gave him a wide grin and urged him to answer it. Key sighed and flipped the phone open.

“Hello?”

“OH WHERE DID YOU GO? ARE YOU OKAY? OH GOSH I AM SO SORRY! ARE YOU OKAY? DID YOU GET HOME SAFELY? -“

“Jin…Jinki, calm down. I can’t understand you.”

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” Jinki’s voice was shaking, a testament to his concerned words. Key couldn’t help the small smile that was lifting up the corners of his mouth. “Look, can we talk about this? Maybe tomorrow?”

"Ok, tomorrow."

"Feeling better?" Minho asked when he hung up. "I told you it'd work out."

Key nodded, he really felt better. It was probably silly and stupid to be on such a roller coaster ride of emotions, but he couldn't help himself. Jinki had that power to make him feel like flying or hitting the hard ground below. Today was a testament to how much he didn't know about his crush. He didn't know Jinki was capable of such words, such a cold expression. But though those cold words were aimed at him, he couldn't help but feel a bit more respect towards Jinki as a person. He couldn't help but be a bit happy to know that Jinki wasn't some one dimensional idiot, that he was capable of displaying other emotions as well.
