CHAPTER THIRTEEN:

When they arrived, the party was in full swing. Jinki looked around with an uncertain expression; he gaped at the sight of his classmates grinding each other on the dance floor. He said nothing as Kibum let go of his hand to search the room. It's not that he had never been to a party; he just never took his high school boyfriend to one. Somehow with Kibum's presence, it made him much more aware of the girl dancing on his aunt's coffee table, and the drunken people falling over his aunt's stairs. On top of it all, he hadn't told anyone that he was gay (was he even gay or was he attracted to just Kibum? Because guys never really appealed to him before...well, girls didn't either).

"I found the perfect place to break up," Kibum said excitedly, returning to his side. "Right in the middle of the dance floor. So you just...go dance and wait for my cue."

"And what would that be?"

"I'll think of something."

"Do we even know if the culprit is here?"

Kibum glanced around the room, "I don't know. It wouldn't hurt to try."

"Key!" A voice called out amidst the crowd. Kibum squinted with his eyes and scanned ahead...

"No way! Cola!"

Jinki took a step back as a girl emerged from the sea of bodies to tackle Kibum to the ground. They both shrieked and laughed, dusting themselves off as they got up.

“No way! It’s Cola!” Kibum turned to him, face shining brightly. Jinki tilted his head to one side because he didn’t know who “Cola” was, “She studied with me in the US.”

Ah.

“What are you doing here?”

“I'm staying at my aunt's and my cousin took me to this party.” She extended her hand to Jinki, “I’m Nicole.”

Nicole -> Cola? “You, too,” He shook her hand. She looked friendly; but there was something about the way her eyes narrowed a bit that bothered him. She looked like she was scrutinizing him, and Jinki did not like to be subjected to a random person’s judgmental eyes even if she was Kibum’s friend.

“Excuse me,” He told no one in particular because neither Kibum nor Nicole was longer listening to him. “I am going to find Joon.”

-

He found his cousin deep within the house, near the kitchen. Joon spotted him first, waving frantically to get his attention.

“Hey! Chips?”

“Auntie is going to skin you,” Was the first thing out of Jinki’s mouth. "These people are doing serious damage to your house."

“Whatever, she loves me too much.”

“Let’s go to the dance floor.”

Joon looked startled, “I’m not…into guy-guy-incest…”

“No, stupid! That’s where Kibum and I are going to break up. You wouldn’t want to miss that, would you?”

“Oh! Oh!” Joon grabbed his shoulders to steer him through the crowd, “Let’s go!”

They reached the edge of the dance floor, which was really just a clear space in the living room. It was hard to decide what they were supposed to be doing while waiting for Kibum’s cue. Joon gave Jinki an unsure smile before squeezing himself in the middle of a group of people who were dancing. Jinki stood back, part of the floor and not really, waiting.

It didn’t take long before Kibum approached him, looking flushed and furious.

“There you are! Take me home!”

“Ah…”

“I said, take me home!” Kibum’s voice was in a screech, loud enough to draw attention from the people who were standing nearby.

“Why?” Jinki uttered awkwardly.

“This place is filthy. I can’t believe you’d take me here. This is how you want to celebrate our anniversary? This is your idea of a good time? No thanks! Take me home!”

Murmurs arose from the watchers, and Jinki swallowed the lump in his throat. This felt too real, but he knew it wasn’t because it was nowhere near their anniversary. He knew it was an act; but from the look on Kibum’s face, he felt guilty and nervous anyway.

“Calm down,” He hissed.

“Don’t tell me to calm down, you prick!”

“Ah, I’m sorry." Seriously, he was at a loss here. "You’re right. Let’s go home.”

Kibum took a step back, brows furrowing, “No. Don’t touch me. I don’t know where your hands have been.”

“I’ll wash them!” Jinki offered.

“Oh God he’s dumb,” He heard someone mutter, Jinki craned his neck to see who it was and saw Jonghyun mouthed, “Fight.”

“Oh. Oh…Oh!” Jinki said slowly, “Well, maybe I won’t. And take yourself home. Go home, Kibum.”

“Fine. But once I'm out that door, it’s over.”

He watched Kibum sauntered off, arms crossed and body hunched over like he was hit. He had to admit that Kibum was a good actor, him…not so much. Jinki nervously glanced at the crowd and hoped that one person bought it. To his amazement, everyone was staring wide-eyed at him.

“Tough,” One of his classmates whispered, “I’m sorry, man.”

Well, one person bought it. But no one acted particularly suspicious; there was no one he could pinpoint as the culprit.

Jinki shrugged, that person wasn’t here after all.

-

“Wait up!”

Shit. Shit. Shit. Kibum sighed mentally, the last thing he needed was to be followed. He wasn’t sure how much longer he could hold it in - he was going to burst into hysterical laughter any moment and he would rather it not be witnessed. Why was Lee Jinki so stupid!? They had planned this. Why did he still looked so confused!?

“Cola.”

“Wow that was intense back there. I didn’t know you weren’t having fun.”

“Oh, about that…”

“But hey,” Nicole rushed on, “I’m sorry about you and Jinki. Honestly, he didn’t seem like the right person for you anyway.”

“It’s not like that,” Kibum rolled his eyes. “We were just…”

But he was interrupted once again, “I know someone who is perfect for you.”

“That’s sweet, Cola,” Kibum grabbed her shoulders. “But that wasn’t real. None of it was real. We were just acting.”

“What?”

“It’s a long story, I’ll tell you about it later.”

“So, you guys aren’t broken up?”

He pursed his lips, “No way! Over his dead body! Lee Jinki will never be able to get rid of me.”

“Over his dead body, huh?”

“What?”

“Nothing,” Nicole perked up, “Hey. Let’s go have a movie marathon like we used to.”

“Sure. But we can’t go back to my place, my parents have guests over.”

“We will go to my cousin’s. His family lives nearby. I’ll tell him to leave the party at Joon’s and meet us there.”

“Okay,” Kibum linked his arms with hers, “Let’s go, babe.”
