My initial writing got lost so I attempted a new lead...and I think I got a bad start so far. I'll rewrite that next chance I get.

Not much writing done, but I've been doing some non-fiction reading.

First, I'm three months late in finding out that Baen Universe is closing down[baens-universe.com] next year in April. I'd signed up back in February but I forgot all about it. I'd thought it would always be there.

That had a forum where you could get critiques and if deemed good enough, the story had a chance of being picked up. Sigh.

On the other note, I'm still reading On Writing by Stephen King.

Something about 'can't make a bad writer competent' struck a chord in me. Not sure what yet. That and the situational play: King's belief, besides the toolbox, is that you don't write about plots. You create the situation, flesh out the characters, and see what happens.

I think I've been forcing plots too much in my short stories...and this idea is akin to Uncle Jim's positional play. When two pros mention something similar, I ought to at least check it out.

I'll see if I can try this with my latest attempt.
