And he has answered my prayer:

Yes, children, there will BE a Battle Royale American remake and no, it will not be toned down. Though the JCinema purist (i.e. pompous ass) in me will wretch at the gaijin counterparts of Shuya, Noriko, Shogo, Mimura, Kiriyama, Mitsuko, Kitano, Oneesan and others, the novelty of the idea that I can go to a real live movie theatre and actually watch high school kids tear into each other with randomly assigned weapons. I hope they keep the original musical score.
Why is this so exciting for me? I don't really know; maybe it's because I know the BR story so well (having read the novel and manga and seen both the film and its craptacular sequel), it'll be exciting to see a new spin on it with some new faces and new weapons and deaths and antics. Part of me still kind of views it like one of the fanfics I skip over because the title is "The American Battle Royale," but in recent years there have been some decent Western remakes. The Ring and Dark Water were both very good and stayed true to their JHorror parents, and The Grudge actually improved Ju-On (though it doesn't hold a candle to the made for tv Japanese version).
Plus, if we're getting edgier, maybe we can see some American remakes of other more extreme films like Tetsuo: Iron Man, Izo, and Meghan and Liz's favorite, Suicide Circle. Well, ok, Izo doesn't really work in a Western context, seeing how it's all hinging on Buddhist theology, but another of Takashi Miike's movies will be remade...Ichi the Killer would work just as well with the Mafia or ghetto gangsters as it does with Yakuza.
I'm a happy chibi today, because even though I didn't find anything at KOP today and I couldn't finish my BM, I got to spend it with some of my best friends, I'm playing D&D, we left Mike a love letter on his windshield (sorry Chris), and there is an American remake of my favorite movie ever.
Hallelujah.
